Title: Heads up vs north up
#1
I purchased an iPad and Navionics thinking I would use it as a chartplotter. Then I discovered that it would only operate north up and not orient Heads up when I turned. I contacted Navionics to question this and they replied with a long disclaimer that iPads were not intended to replace chart plotters and should not be relied upon. So I came up with a poor man's solution. I locked the screen to prevent any rotation and then merely turned the iPad by hand whenever the boat was turned thus keeping the screen icon pointing in the direction of travel. There is less turning than you think on most trips.

However, I am thinking about getting inavx. Will it rotate heads up on it's own? Also I read here that Navionics now has a fix for the problem. Anyone know about this?

Yes iNavX supports both course up and North Up chart orientation. Either the device compass or GPS can be used for the orientation.

I don't believe the Navionics app on iPad supports course up chart orientation.
