Does anyone know of a compact scanner that will work with a Mac? I have a very good Canon flatbed scanner, but a flatbed, even the 'slim ones' take up too much room on the boat. I'm thinking either a handheld that you 'wipe' over the original, or maybe something like a Visioneer (which doesn't have drivers for a Mac). It would be nice to be able to scan documents, and even 'borrowed' charts while cruising.

How about this one

IRIScan (Mac OS 10.5 and VISTA compatible)

Comes with Readiris OCR software. I do use the Pro version to scan documents with my Canon scanners.

Thanks Manou,
Exactly what I was looking for. Just ordered one.

OK, I'm looking again. The IrisScan is not available in North America, even though their website accepted my order, credit card number, etc, then tells me several days later. They suggested several alternatives that they will start selling 1/1/08. but the recommendations were both pen models designed to scan one line of text at a time. Not what I was after.

Any new suggestions?

OK, found a Pentax DSmobile 600 Scanner that can run off the USB and has Mac drivers available. It's similar sized to the Visioneer and cheaper. It also has significantly better feedback on Amazon (for what that's worth...) It's Twain enabled so it will work with Photoshop and many other Mac applications. The Pentax website says for OS X 10.3 and higher so hopefully it will work with Leopard.

Hi

today I received an AD mail that there's a new IRIScan Version 2 portable scanner available for 99€

OK, should have added earlier that I got the Pentax and it's working great with Leopard. Very handy onboard, though it is sheet-feed (similar concept to the Iris) so I can't scan sections of a chart and past the images together - unless I cut the chart up into strips...

Also, The IRIScan Express2 now appears available in the US, and is advertized in-stock at Amazon for $115 (after rebates).

Just for the record, this is the Fujitsu ScanSnap S300M for Mac:
