Anyone found a good iPhone case? I was riding the rail on a J-105 this weekend with my iPhone in a ziploc bag and don't want to take that risk again.
This one is available now,

and, although this next one is not, it looks interesting,

Sadly the Otterbox isn't waterproof, but the NepTunes one looks promising.

Currently I use an Aquapac phone case, which is waterproof, but only just useable.

It can be tricky answering calls, especially if it's one of your crew who's not used to an iPhone (you have to swipe it a few times to answer, and if you're not fast enough it goes to voicemail), and the proximity detector has the habit of turning off the phone so you can't hang up calls. Sometimes I have to open the damn thing to hang it up.

But everything else (except the ability to use headphones) is pretty functional. You can text, check websites, etc etc.

Until something purpose-built comes along, it's a pretty good solution.
May I add a twist to this conversation?

On the boat, using the iPhone as a phone is secondary; calls can wait ( unless I need to make an outgoing one <g>).

So far, I like the iPhone for referring to tides (AyeTides - thank you August)) and AIS (< http://aisserver.yachtmarine.com/US-OREGON.html> in my case).

I mostly daysail - but I have ambitions, so my current criteria are probably different than most: Intermittent reference, as opposed to ongoing navigation.

But I would like to protect the iPhone from 1st dropping it, and 2nd from water/spray. One thought I had was something like a binocular harness, but that seems to bulky & overkill.)

Perhaps a lanyard would address the issue, but is there a case that attaches to lanyard that can also fit in a pocket?

In the meantime, I continue to try to be careful. More suggestions are welcome.

my solution was quite simple and cheap!

one of those cheapy silicon skins from ebay, couple of quid and is very tight fitting, strip of black electricians/pvc tape over the openings at the top and botton (dock/headphones etc)

I can still press the sleep button through the tape, and ok, not a genuine 100 %waterproof case, but the skin gives it a good cushion against knocks - dropped mine several times and has been wetted a few times... ok not immersed, but had a fair old splashing, just wiped the screen and its been fine
You don't need a case at all if you get your phone Shellbacked . Expensive but worth every penny!

zip lock bag. i guess it is obvious i am a cruiser and not a racer.
It is possible with a dremel tool to mod the orginal OtterBox made for the 1G phone to fit the 3G. I did it with mine in a few minutes. The big problem is that OtterBox no longer lists this waterproof box, but you might find one on Ebay.

I've got the Otterbox and love it... not totally waterproof, but the best combination of shell, gel and holster I've found yet...

I agree about the Shellback. After having two iphones get cracked (screen) and scratched--one even had the protective film...I paid more for shellback and yes, it is worth it because it's alot less than replacing the phone!
My iPhone lives in a 'snack size' ziplock 7-24. If I am going to be in danger of falling in I double up with new bags. Bag gets changed about once an week in any event. I use a silicone slip-on case that winds up the ear buds and being in the zip lock it slips in and out of my pocket easily, which is NOT the case with the silicone cover. Also I use the ear buds with the phone in my pocket and the wire lead under my shirt. The slippery ziplock makes dropping the phone through the shirt easy.

By the way, the zip lock does not interfere with the touch screen and when new the visibility is almost perfect.
Found this one, so far looks like the one I might buy

Stumbled into this interesting, if not hugely expensive and oddly timed Magellan ToughCase for the iPhone 3GS. Definitely paying the boat tax on this one...
Guys,

I bought this case and it works to perfection. It is $10, fully functional while in the case, and literally you can dunk it in a bowl of water and it stays completely dry. Trust me, buy this and it's all you need. Here is the link to the site:

Great series of posts.  There's also cost effective preventive measures one could take.  iLoc is a great inexpensive solution for a waterproof case. Being a new entrant, they're even giving away iLocs on their site at http://www.ilocstore.com. If you're not looking to spend a lot and looking for a quick disposable option, this might be it.
This is the waterproof case i use for swimming
