I have been asked if an external USB GPS will work with iPad via the Camera Connection kit. I have confirmed it does not work. iPad displays the message "The attached USB device is not supported" when a USB GPS is connected. USB keyboards and headphones do work.

The same is true for external Bluetooth GPS receivers and multiplexers, they are not discovered by iPhone, iPod or iPad.

This has changed a bit with these external GPS receivers ..

Hi, I wondered if the GNS 5870 MFI external GPS is supported too by iNavX. Because this GPS is certified by Apple and according to a Dutch marine webshop therefore supports all official ios apps. See here for claim including navionics, the charts that I use on my ipad2;

The advantage is that this gps uses bluetooth, and the antenna can be put anywhere in your boat for a good signal reception. Especially handy in a steel boat, which is a cage of Farraday blocking signals. Using the Bad-Elf which is inserted into the ipad itself, is less usefull when it just lays on the chart table.

I have reports that the GNS 5870 works with iNavX just fine.

Great news, thanks. In your post above mine you link to a list of supported external gps devices. This one is not mentioned (yet): http://www.inavx.com/#EXTERNALGPS

As this gps is also used by pilots for flying and navigating with an ipad, I'm pretty convident that sailing with it is safe enough for backup purposes of the chart plotter. The battery life is 10 hours, and no moving parts.

You will have a topic about it here .
