I have a Mac book and have both gpsnavx and macenc , I will be going from san Juan islands to Alaska , which program has best access to canadian charts . I also want to run the laptop at the nave table down below and use an iPad at the helm , should I use inavx and create a network to the laptop ?

GPSNavX can use the CHS raster charts and MacENC can use both the CHS raster and the Navionics Gold. The charts can be found here ..

Refer to the iNavX forum tips and tricks on "Connecting to NMEA data over WiFi"

The Navionics charts for B.C. using MacENC are the best value. The Canadian raster charts (CHS charts) are updated more frequently but cost several times more, and the raster charts just aren't as 'user friendly', in my opinion. All these are available from X-Traverse.

Also make sure you understand you can't share charts between the iPad and Mac, so you essentially have to buy a second set for the iPad, though they're significantly cheaper than the Mac version. They're the same charts and detail, though, for a lot less money.

I was up through the whole area a few weeks ago and found the G4 iPad a fabulous tool. Didn't even have my Mac with me,

G4 iPad. What is that? Just as a point of clarification the CHS raster charts include activations for both iPad/iPhone and Mac where the Navionics are platform specific with different price points.

I'm out of anacortes , wa and am ending up a summer of PNW cruising .I am starting to organize for next year's run to Alaska. I will be adding AIS and will have it running on my laptop , mybthought was to have th 3 g iPad at the helm with inavx , but I thought I could share charts using file sharing wifi network to my laptop , sounds like that Will not work

Both Navionics and CHS license agreements allow each activation to be installed on one platform. Both Navionics and CHS include two activations, but the Navionics are platform specific where CHS will install on Mac or iPad or iPhone. Unfortunately, It is because of these license agreements that iNavX cannot share files between Mac/PC and iPad/iPhone via iTunes. So X-Traverse is used to procure charts and exchange waypoints, routes, tracks, GRIB weather forecasts.

You could access and control your Mac from the iPad using a VNC program. You would then effectively control and view MacENC from the iPad. I tried it and it works (using Mocha's VNC Lite on the iPad), but certainly wouldn't be my preferred approach. However, if you just can spring for the ipad charts (which are amazingly affordable) it may be an option.

Looks like the way to go , I'll just have to spring for the charts fo the iPad , still use my MacBook for ais at the nav station down below and pick that info up at the helm unless someone has a better idea ,

- millert34c - September 25, 2010

One main goal is to have ais info , you have recommended an ais unit that connects with USB , if I connect that to my Mac book will that info be shown on the iPad by way of enema transfer wifi network

Maybe that should read nmea,

This thread is all over the place.

Yes AIS target info is available over a WiFi connection to iNavX.

Flow:

AIS Receiver->USB Port->Mac->MacENC->WiFi->iPad->iNavX->AIS target info plotted..
