Help me improve MacSailing.net... - ReeferJon - February 20, 2007

I've been hosting MacSailing.net for a couple of years now, and have to say that it's been a very worthwhile experience.

However, I can't help feeling that there's a lot more that could be done to the site other than simply a forum. A few ideas that I had were:

Wiki
Set up a MacSailing.net Wiki where users can publish content around specific topics. This could be anything from discussions of available software and hardware to wiring diagrams for NMEA cables.

Blog
When I first set up the site the homepage was a blog, where news articles could be added. I still think this is a valid idea..

Please let me know your thoughts... any suggestions are gratefully accepted!!! I can't promise that I'll implement everything of course, but will try to accommodate sensible suggestions!

Cheers,

ReeferJon

Yes great forum, but time to get rid of the URL link and the new member annoucement on the home page as its just a spammers dream tool. I prefer the forum format over a blog.

Fair point. New "unapproved" users are still displayed on the homepage. However, their URLs are never displayed on the site; you have to be a registered user to view another user's URLs and even then, you can only see other registered users.

But I'll remove the homepage "last registered" user record as suggested.

What about migrating over to a vBulletin forum? They look really nice and one can post images easily.

They do cost some $s but I don't mind chipping in.

Not familiar with the vBulletin format but I use other boards that are phpBB powered (grandbanksowners.com primarily) and pictures are easily posted there. One comment or question I have is how can I make my default to show newest posts first rather than having to set that every time I log on. I know I have done it on the GB BB but I can't find a pref to do that here. I'm sure I've just missed it somewhere.

Thanks and great Board!
