How old a Mac Will work with GPSNavX? - Quilbilly - September 12, 2007

This may be a bit of a Luddite question but I will ask it regardless. I have a new Macbook from work and I suppose I could take it on my boat but I would rather not. So I am thinking of getting a cheap used iBook or some other G3 and using it. How slow of one do people have experience with when using GPSNAVX? I know I could spring for a faster one with more bells and whistles but I actually hesitate to bring one on vacation because if I have wireless, internet, e-mail and DVD's I will use them and I like to get away from that. And unfortunately I have no self control. Any experience- Thanks Todd Miller

Hi Todd

I use an iBook G4 with GPSNavX and MacENC.

GPSNavX runs fast enough on a G4 with all other utilities (Mr. Tides, Google Earth, Weather Dock, Seasonality etc. and sailing related WIDGETS) plus output to an external LCD monitor.
A friend of mine has the same iBook and he even used AIS and GPSNavX, though we haven't that much AIS traffic the region we sail.

Regards,

Manou

GPSNavX will run just fine on an older G3 Mac. Of course it needs 512MB and OS X 10.3.9 and space on the hard drive to store the charts (although they can also be read from a CD or DVD).

Hi Tod, I've been using a Powerbook Pismo G3 with GPSNavX for over two years and it works great. It has 1 gig ram, 80 gig HD and has Mac OS 10.4.10
Tiger. You can pick up one on E-Bay for under $350 or less. Big Grin
