My Quicky has just failed for the third time in 6 months and I'm getting frustrated. Anyone else experiencing these failures or did I just get a lemon?

Quikertek was very responsive in fixing my Quicky the last two time but, without explaining why it failed. Now I'm thinking I may just need to exchange it for a more robust system on the boat.

Has anyone tried the Quickertek Marine Weekender? I'm open for other suggestions.

If you do a search on this site for Quickertek or Quicky you'll find several comments. I'll summarize my comments by saying my Quicky now lies at the bottom of the marina where it belongs... I now have an Engenius 3220. If I figure how much time and postage I spent trying to get the Quicky to work, then the Engenius was cheaper.

Engenius 3220 - Jim Innes - December 24, 2007

Hi Scot,

How have you found the support from Engenius? I too have decided to go the "bridge" route, but I have read some comments on the net that questions Engenius's support.

I am also looking at http://www.bbxpress.net/ solutions.

Jim,
I haven't yet needed any help, so don't know. I found the setup a bit confusing as their instructions aren't assuming usage as we set it up on a boat, but in the end was simpler than I thought. One thing though, my Airport at home is a closed network and I haven't figured out how to connect to it with the Engenius (nowhere to enter the name). However, I'm not concerned as on the boat I don't anticipate needing to connect to a closed network.

Also, as far as setup I've found the board here and on SSCA more useful and probably a better source of advice than tech support for most things (not just Engenius), mostly since it's 'boat-centric', practical, support...

Have a great Christmas!

Scot

I take delivery of a new Beneteau 49 in April... so I'm looking for solutions.

Have a Merry Christmas Scot in Victoria.

Best regards,

Jim

Quicky and MaxGate - seabird51 - December 30, 2007

In all fairness to Quickertek, my Quicky has done very well after the initial send-back and repair. I have used it at Shelter Island in San Diego and marinas in Cabo San Lucas and La Paz as well as anchored way out at Muertos, BCS. The connection has been as fast as my Comcast at home. I usually put it into a baggy, drape over the boom and forget it. Also it does not mind sharing a usb 4-port pigtail with the printer, AIS and GPS. All work well simultaneously.
One little querk - If you disconnect the usb cable with the driver on, it will crash the computer. However if you quit the Quicky driver first it is ok to disconnect. If it is not picking up wifi stations then start the driver and then connect usb cable and it works fine.
BTW - If you are using Iridium data for offshore email let me tell you about MaxGate from Global Marine (GMN). The company was started by a genius named Luis Soltero with X-Gate compression and email management software that simplifies the interface between ps's and Iridium. The now have the same software (MaxGate) for us Mac users. It is definitely my best buy of the year because it saves gobs of airtime with email and esp gribs versus the basic Iridium data interface. User support is on a par with GPSNavX, but I suspect that Luis does not stay up as late as Rich. Even still, got a problem you talk to Luis! Maxgate does prefer its own private usb port.
By changing the location under the Apple menu I can easily flip between wifi and MaxGate.

I guess I stand corrected... from Luis...

"Hi Lou,
thanks for the plug...
And for the record.... I stay up much later than Rich!

None the less both give great support!
