We are currently setting up an M802 ham radio in our boat and really don't want to spend the $1600CA to buy the pactor II modem (with III upgrades). No point in importing from the US as it is built in Germany and thus subject to duty. I have a hazy recollection of a Mac based sound/modem emulation programme, but don't remember the specifics. Does anyone know of this software?? Or anything that lets us bypass getting the Pactor. Ticks me off to have to pay more for the modem than the new ibook. Appreciate any help.

For that kind of money you might want to look at Iridium and XGate for email...

The Pactor II and III protocols are only available from SCS in their hardware modems (these guys basically invented the Pactor I protocol and have never licensed the improved II or III protocols to any other manufacturer.)

There is some Windows software that emulates Pactor I receive only, but nothing I can find that supports duplex I, II or III. The best Mac-based radio decoded that I'm aware of is Black Cat Systems' Multimode which supports the older SITOR A and B standards but not Pactor.

Incidentally, there's a guy selling SCS Pactor III modems on ebay for $739 here if that helps....

Thanks to both. The ones in ebay are going to cost too much getting them over the border. I will try for a used one up here, before I have to bite that bullet.
