NMEA Amplifier/Expander? - Guest - July 14, 2005

I have been successfully running a Garmin GPS 76 map into my iBook using GPSNavX.

This year I put a new DSC VHF radio onboard and split off the GPS output to go to the radio as well as the computer. Problem is, when the radio is connected, the computer can not hear the GPS. If I phyically disconnect the radio the computer is fine again. The radio has no problem with the computer connected or not connected.

Has anyone else experienced this? Do I need a NMEA Amplifier/Expander?

How I would run it -

Have the GPS come into the Mac, then have GPSNavX repeat the GPS NMEA stream to the radio via a Keyspan USB to serail adapter Adapter.

"Repeat" can be selected in the GPS Panel "settings" drawer.

If you need an expander - Guest - March 28, 2006

Because we want our systems to be available independently and/or together, we are using a Noland expander (which works fine). The expander is important if you plan to install more equipment (later) that would use NMEA data.

In that case I would recommend the ShipModul Miniplex 41USB. It can work with or without a Mac connected. There is also an OS X configuration tool for it.
