in mac enc and gpsnavx, there appear ports listed as serial port 1 and serial port 2 that do not appear in the network control panel and are not accessible to either program- how do I get rid of these mystery ports (10.5.2, macbook pro, both ftdi and prolific drive installed and working as dev/cu/usbserial.

Could they be Bluetooth (i.e. virtual serial ports)? You might want to open "Bluetooth" in the System Preferences and select "Edit Serial Ports.." and see if they list there. Remember to restart MacENC if you change the available ports.

nope, not bluetooth- how do I get macenc to "forget" them- it's the only program (well, with gpsnavx) that sees these

MacENC only lists the ports reported by the OS X. It does not maintain its own list. When MacENC starts up, it asks Mac OS X for a list of ports. All ports can also be found in the /dev folder (viewable from a terminal window).
