I am aware that the latter will work on 'Passage Plus' Software, but am not at all sure as regards the NASA set - I assume so, but prefer not to waste even a hundred pounds, unless someone here has tried it.
What about drivers for the Mac? I run under OS 10.5.6 BTW

I must have gone through the "buying cycle" with PassagePlus at least half a dozen times now. It usually goes a bit like this:

1. Attention grabbed by announcement / email etc..
2. Download trial software and demo charts
3. Play with system and am really impressed with speed and usability
4. Think "I'll buy this once I've got some charts.. now where can I get those ARCS Skipper charts?"
5. Go on to the UKHO web site and trawl through all the on-line vendors only to find that they don't sell the ARCS Skipper folios, just every other chart by the Admiralty!
6. Give up and go and have a cup of tea!

So may I so boldly make two suggestions?

1. Sell ARCS Skipper charts via the PassagePlus web site. You may even make a commission, and, for those people willing to re-purchase their chart folios in a new format, it makes buying the product so much easier.

2. Most importantly... please, please, please look at supporting another raster format - preferably Maptech's BSB. The charts may not be as pretty, but they usually sell for about a third the price of ARCS Skipper folios, have world-wide coverage, and are supported by virtually every other Mac / PC based navigation software out there.. so there's loads of users who would license the product to use with their existing cartography.

Just my two pennies worth.. and great news about AIS support, BTW.

Cheers,

I'm pleased to announce the release of PassagePlus v1.5.0.

The main new feature is AIS support, an important safety feature enabling the tracking of ships, aids to navigation and other broadcasters of AIS data. This is particularly valuable for those who sail in busy waters.

There are also improvements to:
- the archived tracks feature,
- the artificial time feature,
- the handling of serial ports,
- the number of supported GPS devices.

And, of course. various bug fixes.

As ever, it can be downloaded via http://www.windvector.com/passageplus/downloads.html or using the Check for Updates function in PassagePlus.

After a period of travelling I am now back programming again and have just released v1.4.3 of PassagePlus. It's a relatively minor update but addresses some requests that users had made:

Improvements to the Related Charts panel. The panel now shrinks to fit the window width where there is a large number of related charts (common for NZMariner users). Also added an option to filter Related Charts to those above a certain scale. Thus, very small scale charts (such as the World chart) that are unlikely to be needed often can be excluded to reduce clutter. The threshold scale can be set in Preferences. A button allows the full list to be shown whenever needed.

Chart Browser now works with NZMariner charts.

When measuring a bearing & distance, distance is now shown to 2 decimal places if less than 10M, 1dp if more.

For first time demo user, one of the demo charts is now automatically opened at first launch rather than leaving the user to work out how to do it.

Best regards

I am pleased to announce that PassagePlus v1.4, released today, adds support for Land Information New Zealand's NZMariner charts, the official raster charts of New Zealand waters.

NZMariner uses the same underlying chart format and security systems as ARCS and the two look the same and function identically once opened. There are currently 159 charts in the NZMariner collection. They fit on a single CD, and when you purchase the CD (which is very reasonably priced) you automatically get permits to open all 159 charts.

NOTE: For existing users who are using ARCS charts only, there are no new features in v1.4 compared to v1.3.4, so there is no need to download this version unless you want to try NZMariner charts.

IMPORTANT: because NZMariner chart permits are stored on the CD, PassagePlus cannot open NZMariner charts unless either the Update CD or the Charts CD was issued after October 2006. Confirm with your retailer when purchasing that the Update CD is October 2006 or later.

Dear All

I haven't posted here for a while. Thought I should let you know I've just released Version 1.3 of PassagePlus. It's available for download via http://www.windvector.com

The two main new features since v 1.1 are: (1) The 'Related Charts' panel allows one-click access to other charts that intersect your current position. The panel shows thumbnails of each such chart and is continually updated as the boat moves. Clicking a thumbnail opens that chart. (2) If you have entered tidal diamond data, tidal vectors are shown on the chart indicating the tide rate and direction at each diamond. The display is updated each minute. Also, automatic tide calculations using the tidal diamond data are now available for dead reckoning and estimated position functions (previously only available for course-to-steer). And you can set an artificial time so you can see the impact of tides at some point in the future (or the past if you want).

This screenshot gives an idea of both features:

A number of more minor improvements have also been made and several bugs fixed. Specifics are in the Version History file.

I continue to work on other potential improvements. In the meantime, constructive feedback is welcome, as always.

Regards
