I have been using the recently introduced em-trak R100 AIS receiver with my MacOS 10.6.8 MacBook Pro laptop. The em-trak drivers work fine. I have also been able to use the em-trak R100 receiver with PolarView NS.

I give a lot more details and provide many illustrations in an article available at:

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/AIS_ShipSpotter.html

So far I find the em-trak R100 is very compatible with the MacOS 10.6.8.

The em-trak R100 AIS receiver can be operated by the power supplied in its USB connection. It only draws 90-milliamperes or about 0.45-Watts.

As a corollary to the above article, I offer some advice on the choice of an antenna for an AIS shore station in another article, available at

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/AIS_Antenna.html

While not specific to the MacOS, the antenna choice is an important part of any receive system. The article describes what I feel is a very good antenna for AIS reception.
