GPSNAVX across the Atlantic in Jester Challenge - eric.andlauer - August 1, 2006 Bonjour I wanted to inform all of you that I used GPSNAVX during the last (and first) JESTER CHALLENGE (a single handed cross atlantic non-race for sailing boats less than 30' - see : jesterinfo.org). We (my FigarOne and myself) arrived first in Newport and only an other boat (a 22' vertue with junkrigging ) arrived out of 10 boat on the starting line. I had no problem with GPSNAVX in 31 days crossing. Last day (4th of July of course) I made a E-navigation (with a backup) from Cap Cod to Newport. It started with 1/2 mile of visibility and 22kts of backwind wind. My only soft/hardwere problem was the incompatibility of Iridium with Mac. Iridium announced some development but nothing is operational to date. My son custumised for me a Email. As a consequence I didn't succeed (but I didn't try hard as the Email connection was more important to recieve grib files) in connecting the Nasa AIS engine. I'm going back to Europe, still single handed, in late November, after the hurican season. Amicalement Eric - GPSNavX - August 1, 2006 Glad GPSNavX worked out for you. I know of Mac users on both Iridium and USGlobalStar. They can use the "Request GRIB" feature in GPSNavX and MacENC. http://www.hintz.org/iridium/ I also know that XWeb works on the Mac.. http://www.globalmarinenet.com/fastweb.htm Contact me directly for Safari configuration. - ReeferJon - May 3, 2007 Eric's trans-atlantic challenge victory is in the June edition of Practical Boat Owner.. together with GPSNavX. Quote:..For navigation, Eric used an Apple Mac laptop computer with a GPSNavX system (sic). He also has an Iridium satellite phone connected to the system..[/quote] - GPSNavX - May 3, 2007 Now he has XGate available to him for efficient satellite communications.. http://www.globalmarinenet.net/email.htm - eric.andlauer - May 21, 2007 GPSNavX Wrote:Now he has XGate available to him for efficient satellite communications.. Interesting information : I'll order it as I'll sail back to Europe in July. |
