does anyone still use their globalstar phone? i am going to be in the bahamas and when i was there last, 3 years ago, my globalstar worked great and that is what i used to download from ocens for email and weather, but i heard that globalstar is not really working well now. i don't want to waste the activation fee, and globalstar will not give a straight answer as to whether the service works there or not. any input?

Yeah, it should work. But why do you have to pay any type of activation fee? We've never had to do anything more than give them a credit card to charge all calls against.

More recently, the need for Globalstar in large parts of the Bahamas has gone away too. If you have a GSM cell phone, it should just work (our AT&T phone worked exceptionall well in the Abacos). Data too. We also found WiFi either free (at bars, etc) or paid for it in the Abacos. With WiFi, we used Skype for calls.

To be honest, the only time we've used our Globalstar phone over the last 5 years was when we were in the Gulf Stream and just wanted to test that it worked (it did).

thanks for the reply. yeah, i have at&t, but i spend most of my time at conception island and that wouldn't work there. i use it for weather downloads from macwx(ocens). and emails hopefully. what was the last time you used the phone and did it take a while to get a connection?

2005-2006. It takes a couple of minutes to lock onto the satellite once you power it up (there are a couple of different satellites that you can select). After that, making a call was instant.
