I met this morning with the yard to talk about our direction regarding upgrading our electronics. We are planning on going with MacENC on a new MacBook. A couple of questions came up for which I was not sure of the answer.

From what I can tell, MacENC supports NMEA 0183 at this time. What plans are there to move to 2000?

If connected to an NMEA radar, will I be able to overlay the entire radar image onto the chart or just the AIS target info? Also, are only specific radar brands supported, or any unit that supports NMEA?

As I'm currently on a older 450MHz G4 machine with only 384Mb of RAM, I have only tried to demo GPSNavX so far, and it is, understandably, slow. I suspect the MacENC demo would severely tax my current system, if it would run at all, so I have not tried it.

There has been a previous thread about having the yellow waypoint # box display more information. I am just now playing with the demo version of GPSNavX and am finding that it would be nice to have the option of having the box disappear somehow while retaining the waypoint itself and route. Perhaps the waypoint info could show as the cursor rolled over it or with a modifier key/click. When I have several waypoints close together, for instance in a tight winding passage, the boxes can cover a lot of valuable information (rocks, kelp, etc.). Or, alternatively, could the box and waypoint # have a transparent option?

Thanks. Great procuct, BTW. When I upgrade to a new Core/Duo machine, I suspect it will be a lot quicker and I will probably consider MacENC at that time.

I sail around Uk waters- i know there are many PC nav packages but I have used Macs for working for many years and I cannot get my head around a PC and after about 5 mins the PC laptop nearly flies overboard. Im not a computer geak and hopeless with terminology.
Im purchasing a Macbook pro to help me keep on working whilst on my boat- hopefully so that I can progress to living on board. Im so impressed by GPSNavX for the US. Is there anything for the UK please? Can I link GPS and AIS systems up too?
I would really appreciate any help and advice.

Mac OS X 10.4.9 has just been released and the good news is that the Mac now supports the
a Sony GPS CS1 unit on Intel based Macs, but unfortunately not on PowerPC. The unit
mounts directly on to the desktop and the GPS data can be accessed as if it were on a USB
drive.

This is something I have been waiting for since I bought the Sony unit for tagging photos last
year.

We are going ahead with the NASA AIS.

Our GPS is already connected to our iBook for GPS Nav X using a Keyspan High Speed USB to Serial Converter.

Will I need to buy a double Keyspan adaptor or should we be doing something else?

I have just purchase 60csx to work with my g4 powerbook OS X ver 10.4.8 with the included usb cable to absoultly no success. I can enable direct access to the SD memory card on the device, but zero luck with the connection to the actual GPS.

Will CM-93 charts work in MacENC?

I am new MacENC and GPSNavX. I am looking for accurate charts for the Caribbean and understand that vector is much more accurate, correct?

I know for the US Caribbean, ENCs are a free download. But what about the Bahamas, Leewards and Windwards? Suggestions? S-57 pack from chartworld?
