  MacENC, Seatalk, and MiniPlexBT
Posted by: jagasail - April 12, 2006 07:35 - Forum: MacENC & GPSNavX - No Replies

Just a 'things that work great' note here.

Last weekend I finally got everything working with a bit of help from gpsnavx. What I have is:

MacENC (of course)
MiniplexBT (wireless version)
Raymarine ST40 wind/depth/log instruments talking Seatalk
JRC 1800 Radar/GPS/Plotter
Garmin GPS76
Icom 403 with DSC

The Seatalk is wired directly to the Miniplex without any Raymarine NMEA convertor. If you have more than one instrument you probably have surplus power cables and they work great for this. Connect the red to Port 4a, and the yellow to Port 4b, and clip off the black. Then use GPSNavx's nifty config utility to toggle on the Seatalk option. On the power cable the yellow is clipped off, but if you strip off a bit of the cover you'll find it. Note the Seatalk wiring is not documented anywhere I've found.

[color:red]The Wireless Miniplex is fantastic[/color]. It ties everything together, sending my position to the Icom (for the DSC), and all to MacENC. Haven't yet tried uploading a route to the GPS or Plotter but will soon. It's really cool with the wireless because I don't have my Mac tied to the Nav station right below the companionway - a very precarious place for a piece of electronics that doesn't tollerate water well. I can sit and work wirelessly in the bunk or at the table, much safer (and more comfortable) locations. It's also really great having access to the GPS and instrument information on my Mac screen. The Miniplex was also very simple to wire up.

Unfortunately my Radar (which was purchased for my old boat before I went back to Macs) doesn't put out much NMEA data; otherwise that would be even better.

Finally, you'll note I have two GPS's tied in. I generally like the GPS76 in the cockpit primarily as a compass (COG) and speed (SOG) and have used it that way for several years. I have a traditional mechanical compass but seldom use it. The MiniPlex config utility allows me to prioritize which GPS data is sent to the other electronics - if I happen to have the radar/plotter on it will use that; otherwise it will use the GPS76, but not clog up the data stream with both. Again, really cool.

Now, if I could just get an AIS wirelessly into the system all would be perfect!

Seeking testers for ARCS compatible OS X navigation app
Posted by: jfewtr - April 10, 2006 06:40 - Forum: Announcements - Replies (3)

I am developing a navigation application for OS X, compatible with the UKHO's ARCS charts. It is called PassagePlus and is currently under testing; see http://www.windvector.com . If anyone is interested in becoming a tester, please contact me via the Support/Contacts page on the above site. I am particularly interested to have it tested on an Intel Mac. It is a Universal binary but no testing has yet been done on Intel.

Jon

MacENC in action - UK vector charts and AIS!
Posted by: ReeferJon - April 9, 2006 23:34 - Forum: MacENC & GPSNavX - Replies (37)

I've been helping GPSNavX out with testing MacENC with European vector charts, and had an opportunity to try it "in anger" over the weekend, while sailing in the Solent, UK.

Check out http://web.mac.com/jonknight/iWeb/High%20Spirit for the pictures.

For those of you interested, my setup's as follows:

- Apple iBook G4 1.2GHz with 1.25Gb RAM
- MacENC beta 3.26
- Navionics S63 charts (from http://www.chartworld.com )
- Nasa AIS engine (from http://www.nasamarine.com )
- Navman 5500 chartplotter running C-MAP charts
- Autohelm instruments with Seatalk to NMEA convertor (not working yet)

MacENC 3.26 works well with these European encrypted ENCs. There some minor issues with the Navioncs charts (they're quite slow at low zoom) but this is overcome by setting the rendering options within MacENC.) The best thing with the Navionics charts is the price: 150 euros for a folio, which equates well with MapTech's price for raster charts. Thanks to Juergen from Chartworld.com for helping GPSNavX and I test these charts on evaluation.

GPSNavX will be releasing more info about MacENC's S63 support later, but in the meantime, I hope this gives you a taster!!

Regards,

Reeferjon

  MacBookPro & Garmin GPSmap 276c
Posted by: cguegan - April 8, 2006 09:04 - Forum: MacENC & GPSNavX - Replies (3)

Hello,

I'm planning a week sail trip on the french west indies (From Martinique to Saint Vincent) and as a switcher from PC world I'm investigating Mac solutions. I've downloaded the GPSNavX and try to use it with my Garmin GPSMap 276c with the USB cable. I have not found a solution to make it work.

I know that a serial to USB cable solution exists but I still try to make it work directly with USB because:
- MacGPS Pro™ seems to work with receiving real time data from the GPS (at least a friend tells me that it works with his powerbook and the same Garmin GPS unit with USB)
- LoadMyTracks works (I've tested it)

When I launch the demo of GPSNav X, and I try to connect the GPS, I've tested with all GPS types and the only port available is /dev/cu.Bluetooth-PDA-Sync.

Do I miss something or a pure USB solution with this GPS unit is not possible? And I can't wait for an official support for Mac by Garnin, but does it will help?

I'm also interrested in the Waterproof 20 Channel USB GPS product but if I can use my Garmin it will nicer.

Thanks from Belgium

Christophe

Finally!! We can run Windows/Linux VMs on top of OS X!!
Posted by: adjuvantjfoster - April 6, 2006 09:14 - Forum: General - No Replies

On Digg this morning <http://www.digg.com/http://www.digg.com/> I found this story:

Parallels releases VM Workstation 2.1 for OS X

Finally!! We can run Windows/Linux VMs on top of OS X!! I have it installed on my Mac Book Pro and it absolutely flies! Free 45 Day trial!

<http://www.parallels.com/en/products/workstation/mac/>

So now my decision is to buy an Intelbased Mac laptop now or wait a few months....(grin)....after all, looking at the rumor sites, it is a dilemma....(sigh)....

GPS + Charts on a PDA?
Posted by: ginginsman - April 3, 2006 07:18 - Forum: Hardware - Replies (1)

Is anyone here running a PDA which has a GPS receiver and can use the Maptech or other charts? I'd be interested in advice, comments or pointers from anyone with experience doing this. As near as I can tell, it's a Windoze world for such devices (Ipaq, Dell Axim, Navman, etc.).
