GPSNavX 3.70 Overview function is great!
Posted by: cyberhusky - October 1, 2005 11:57 - Forum: MacENC & GPSNavX - Replies (5)

The new GPSNavX 3.70 overview function is great! And even fast on my iBook G3 with OS 10.4.
It are these little features like these that do make this prog so wonderfull.

GPSNavX team keep up the great work!

From the update newletter/email:
Hearing that Sailmail will come to MAC too is even better.
And that BSB charts will be free from 2006 on is even the best news. Unfortunately we here in EU will continue to pay! :-(

  MacENC and International ENC's
Posted by: GPSNavX - September 8, 2005 10:50 - Forum: General - No Replies

Currently MacENC only works with unencrypted S-57 ENCs. That is great in the United States because the NOAA and Army Corp. of Engineers ENC's are free and unencrypted.

Unfortunately the rest of the world wants your hard earned dollars for what taxes have already payed for. So most international ENCs are encrypted allowing their use only on one computer. Worse yet some require a hardware dongle.

It is my plan to support encrypted ENCs as soon as possible. There are a number of hoops to jump through to get this done. International ENC's are not cheap and I have heard some are not as good as their raster counter parts.

Here is a source for International ENCs

  Domain problems
Posted by: ReeferJon - September 6, 2005 14:22 - Forum: General - Replies (1)

Hi there,

I've you've found this topic, then it means that you've managed to find the temporary home of macsailing.net. For those of you who are interested, and don;t mind listening to me rave away for a couple of minutes, I've had ISP problems.

Basically, Macsailing.net was pointed to yachtbytes.com, a domain I registered some time ago that was hosted by an ISP called Vizaweb.

The yachtbytes.com domain expired. However, I didn't receive any emails from Vizaweb or anyone else asking for me to pay renewal.

Last Wednesday I tried to log onto the site to check messages and was hit be a weird search engine page apparently registerd to my domain, yachtbytes.com.

I sent a number of emails to Vizaweb, and , two days later received a message as follows:

--------------------------------

Greetings Jon,

Please visit the URL to view and pay this invoice.

https://www.vizaweb.com/hosting/invoice_...xxxxxxxxxx

Thanks,
VizaWeb.com

This email was generated on: 09/02/2005 02:44:21 pm

------------------------------------

This was paid on receipt, and I sent them a nice email confirming my email address (despite having received the above email successfully), and requesting that they repoint my domain to the web server. That was last week.

Two rather snotty emails later, and I have still yet to received a response.

One domain transfer request later and I'm still to receive an acknolwedgement.

So.. macsailing.net will be back at it's old address (with new ISP HostGator) as soon as possible. In the meantime, please access the site through my personal site... http://www.reeferjon.com/bbs

And one final thought.... DON'T USE VIZAWEB. There's a phrase that we in the UK would use to describe them that rhymes with "Rollocks"...

Regards,

ReeferJON

  MacENC cell viewing
Posted by: GPSNavX - August 29, 2005 21:41 - Forum: General - No Replies

The next release of MacENC will make cell viewing much more automatic and intuitive. The best cells for where ever you are viewing will automatically be opened. Those that are no longer in view will be closed. You will still be able to "Scroll To" any cell. MacENC will behave like a dedicated chart plotter.

Sharing the GPS (and other data) with MacENC and GPSNavX
Posted by: GPSNavX - August 21, 2005 10:42 - Forum: General - Replies (3)

I expect the next release of MacENC will allow it to share the GPS with GPSNavX. This will allow both applications to run simaltaneously and plot the current position on their respective charts.

It will work something like this

- in GPSNavX Connect to the GPS in GPSNavX via the "Connect" on the "GPS" menu

- In MacENC choose "GPSNavX" on the "GPS" menu.

Now both apps will be using the same GPS.

Already waypoints, tracks, and routes can be shared via the tranfer "Export" and "Import" menu items on their respective menus.

Going forward I plan to allow iSync to be used for keeping waypoints, routes and tracks to be kept synched between both apps and multiple computers.

  MacTel and the future
Posted by: JohnDProctor - August 20, 2005 02:29 - Forum: Bootcamp & Windows - Replies (3)

With the announcement by CodeWeavers that their CrossOver product (which they claim will run 96% of Windows software under Linux) will be supported under MacOS X86 creates an interesting problem for existing Mac Charting software vendors.

For me it is not the charting software that is important but the maintained data source. Conceivably I will have the choice of running any number of Windows based software applications under MacOS X86 using the CrossOver library conversion/emulation software. This I will be able to do at native ISP (Instruction Set Processor) speeds thus eliminating the need for products like Virtual PC and I don't have to run a copy of Windows to do it! Lest we all think this is pie in the sky, CodeWeavers has by all accounts an excellent track record of delivering Windows applications support under Linux.

So now I can choose an application that supports a maintained data set which supports me.

It is a cruel world but just supporting the Mac is not good enough! I need data for the application to be useful and many software vendors have not graspped that nettle yet.

  Does MacENC read other chart?
Posted by: LelyCat - August 18, 2005 22:23 - Forum: MacENC & GPSNavX - Replies (3)

I've tried to search on the website if MacENC works not only with S-57 ENC charts but also with the raster charts covered by GPSNavX with no luck. Does MacENC read all of the charts GPSNavX can read?
Thanks for your help.

  SailMail on Mac
Posted by: paulfin - August 10, 2005 13:58 - Forum: General - Replies (16)

Hello All,
I am an SFBay sailor - working on a transition to multihulls. Big Grin

I am intrigued by the SailMail Service - email over SSB. Their site shows that their client software, Airmail, is Win based. Does anyone know of an effort to create a Mac client for this service? I am assuming that there is no real technical obstacle to this.

paul
