Title: Does Assisted GPS work without assistance
#1
Does the aGPS in the current iPhone work if there is no connection to another data source (3G or WiFi). Will the same be true of the iPad?
Thanks

Only iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPad 3G have an [assisted] GPS receiver. In addition iPhone 3GS and iPad 3G have a compass.

Yes the [assisted] GPS can acquire an accurate position without needing a cell or WiFi connection. The acquisition can take longer without assistance.

I've just heard from a friend who is 5 days into a passage in the Caribbean. His iPhone can no longer acquire a GPS signal. Maybe the almanac data gets too old after several days, and the GPS cannot do a cold-start.
