You would connect the data cable to a USB adapter such as this one ..

Once that is done, install the linked FTDI driver, plug in the USB adapter to your Mac and start MacENC. Select the port USBSerial-XXX, rate 4800 in the GPS panel Settings drawer. Select "Use GPS Port" in the AIS/RADAR panel Settings drawer.
The AIS1000 will act as both GPS and AIS receiver for MacENC.
