Title: Navigating with an AIS transponder
#1
Most AIS transponders have the ability to send their position, course, and speed (and other AIS data) to the interfaced Mac.

MacENC now has the ability to use the AIS transponder NMEA data to navigate with. What this means, is use don't need a GPS receiver interfaced to MacENC if you have an AIS transponder.

Just select the port of the AIS transponder (i.e. KeySerial1) in the AIS/RADAR Settings panel, rate 38400 and MacENC will use the AIS transponder to navigate with. In the event a GPS is interfaced to MacENC, then it will take precedence over the AIS transponder for real-time plotting.

Note: As of 07/06/2008 AIS B transponders are not legal to use in US waters.

I don't understand. Could you describe this feature in a more idiot-proof way? Smile

Hello !

I just bought MacEnc. I am trying to connect my AIS transponder through an Serial to USB adapter (Dynex DX-UBDB9) I have installed the proper Mac OS X driver.

But in the setting I do not see the Keyserial port, only the Bluetooth...

How do I connect using my adapter. How do I get the serial port to show ????

Thanks in advance

1) Make sure the adapter is plugged in BEFORE starting MacENC.

2) Make sure you select the rate 38400

I would also check in System Profiler "Software" -> "Extensions" that the driver is actually showing up.

I didn't find an OS X compatible driver for that adapter on their site. Often times the Prolific driver will work (find link in MacENC help). In that case the port is USBSerial.

When using an AIS transponder to navigate with, the GPS panel is not used, but instead the AIS panel is used by selecting the port and rate of the AIS transponder in the AIS panel Settings drawer. Uncheck "Use GPS Port".
