I have been teaching marine gps/chartplotting for a few years and following the industry with much interest. I must say how impressed I am with the iNavX solution on the iPad. Got the iPad this afternoon and a few hours later I am up and running with iNavX/AyeTides/X-Traverse Canadian charts. Well done.
Now for the very stupid question. Can the GPS positioning function be turned off on the iPad, for example while planning waypoints and routes? I can't find reference to that in the manuals -- must be missing it. Thanks.

When the chart is displayed, select "Setup". "Pos. Icon Loc." setting will determine how the chart is scrolled with the position:
"Ctr" will put the position icon in the center
"Offset" will offset the position icon based on course
"None" will not scroll the chart.

p.s. Regardless of the setting above, double-tapping the Chart Tab will scroll the chart back to the device position.

Thank you. Is the GPS receiver "always on" in the iPad then? Is there a battery charge penalty for that?

The "Location Services" are "ON" when you see the triangle in the iPad/iPhone status bar. Most apps will turn them off when they exit and the triangle will go away. "Location Services" can be explicitly disabled by either enabling "Airplane Mode" or turn "OFF" "Location Services" in the iPhone/iPad "Settings".
