I'm currently using GPSNavX on a Mac netbook in the cockpit, which has limitations of needing a permanent power connection, salt spray, and poor visibility. I've been looking for a daylight-readable display to wire as a remote monitor to a computer running below, but I haven't found a good solution.

At home I run a Mac Mini home theater and control it when I'm feeling really lazy with my iPhone running VNC, the remote display protocol that Apple calls remote desktop. There are VNC clients for virtually every tablet system.

Has anyone used a VNC client-tablet at the helm to display a computer running below? This could be through WiFi, Bluetooth, or maybe ethernet.

Relatedly, I'm eyeing the $140 Nook touch eReader. This has been hacked to allow android apps (I assume VNC would work) and has bluetooth, wifi, and a 6' sunlight-readable touchscreen with 16 shades of grey and a battery that should last 12 hours or more. If this could efficiently mirror my Mac/GPSNavX system below through WiFi or bluetooth, it could be a sweet system. Plus I could use it at night to read Moby Dick.

Reports on VNC success or failure would be helpful.

I played with VNC Viewer a bit awhile back on my iPhone. It seemed to work OK but the iPhone screen is just too small to use to view my MacBook screen. I won't be getting an iPad for a few more months still. I was talking with some friends who write apps for the iPhone/iPad earlier this week and they suggested LogMeIn. Have not tried it yet but will be looking into it as well.
