Title: Replacing ENCs?

When an ENC is first issued the filename looks like this: EA200001.000 (with .000 at the end).

As it is updated the suffix is incremented so it look like this: EA200001.026 (for example).

My question: Can we trash the old files when an ENC is updated? I think I tried it once and ran into trouble. Is the .000 file necessary? I assume the intermediate files (.001, .002, .003, etc) can be discarded. Is that right?
