Title: NEMA 1083 Output Directions Needed
#1
I purchased a Nasa Marine Clipper GPS Repeater to hook up to my Standard Horizon GX2100 radio so as to be able to see COG, Track, Bearing, and Distance to Waypoint from the helm while racing. Unfortunately after purchasing the GPS Repeater, I found out that the support tech who told me that the radio did output this information was wrong and that it only sends out current position.

Since I use GPSNavX on a G4 ibook as a chart plotter while racing, I thought I would connect the computer to the GPS Repeater and all would be well. I tried to set this up last week and was not able to get any readings from the GPS Repeater, so I know that I did not do this correctly and I need some help.

I used a Keyspan USB-Serial adaptor from the computer connected to a Ray Marine Serial PC Cable, to hook up to the GPS Repeater. The GPS Repeater has three wires, power, ground, and input. After hooking up the power and ground wires to my instrument circuit, I tried hooking the input wire to the pin 2 wire and then the pin 3 wire when the pin 2 wire didn't work with no luck.

My only conclusion is that I did not set up the GPSNavX program properly. Can you help me with directions on how to set up the program correctly to output the data I need?

Thanks,

Gary

Should be as simple as connecting Pin 3 (Data out) and Pin 5 (Ground) then selecting KeySerial1 in the GPS panel Settings panel for Repeat port. Uncheck "Autopilot" only so all NMEA data received into the primary port will be resent to the repeat port. You can view the GPS panel Monitor drawer to see received data and repeated data will be enclosed in brackets. Rate should be 4800.

Do be sure the Keyspan adapter is connected before starting GPSNavX and that the correct Keyspan driver is installed (linked in the GPSNavX help).

p.s. It's actually NMEA-0183 data.

Thanks to your guidance I was able to upgrade my Keyspan driver, hook up the Serial Cable to the GPS Repeater, and set the proper settings in the program so that the Repeater is now working.

It seems that for the Repeater to be fully functional, it needs NMEA messages for RMB, RMC, and GSA. I am correct that GPSNavX only sends out RMC and GSA? If so, is there a way to add RMB?

Thanks for your help.

GPSNavX only sends out the NMEA data sentences it receives from the primary port (The interfaced GPS). If a waypoint is activated in GPSNavX ("Goto"), then GPSNavX will create and send out the $GPAPB, $GPBOD, $GPBWC, $GPRMB, $GPXTE, $GPVTG and $GPWPL NMEA sentences.
