Title: ipad & iridium
#1
Sailing in Patagonia, I am planning to buy an ipad + inavX.
I am just wondering how I could connect inavX to my iridium to get the grib files. Is it possible to use the ipad as a stand alone terminal or do I need to use an other computer to get the grib file and then transfer it to the ipad?
Thanks for your help

Your iPad needs a WiFi connection (can be via cell) to get GRIB files. An Iridium phone uses a serial connection. So far there is no way to interface one to an iPad.

Thanks but there is no cell connections in Patagonia.
My only link to Internet is my Irridium. So If I understand I need to use my macBook connected to the irridium via the rs232 interface and then to transfer my grib files to the ipad (via local wifi)

Your Macbook would need to be a WiFi hotspot (AdHoc network) to your iPad. Your Macbook would have the Iridium connection. Using iNavX you could then request a GRIB from X-Traverse.

As a followu p, the best solution is to use your Mac to download and view GRIB files. Use XGate from GlobalMarine Networks and MacWX to get very compressed GRIB files from OCENS WeatherNet.
