Title: USB/Serial Driver, MacENC = HangUp of MacOS
#1
Hy there,

on board i have an older MacBook with MacENC. I'll do serveral tests, and every time I let the MacBook run for more than a few hours the OS will hang up. No warning of MacOS appears, it shows the normal display or screensaver and no input from the keyboard or mouse is possible.

If i run the MacBook without MacENC it runs fine for multiple days with no hangUp.

Has anybody same issues like me?

MacBook, 1,83 Ghz Intel Core Duo
Mac OS 10.6.8
USB HS Serial Converter, Future Technology Devices International Limited, Ver 4.0
MacENC 8.40

Any hints?

Regards
Sven

Make sure you have the latest version of the FTDI driver installed..

Be sure to unplug the adapter before installing and re-start Mac after installing then re-connect the adapter.

Hy,

thanks for the hint. It seems it is a different driver, i will try this at the weekend and will report it here.

Also make sure your serial adapter is not coming disconnected from your Mac while using MacENC.

Hy,

the same problem with the new driver, i will observe if there is a disconnect from my gps (furuno-GP30), sometimes there is a "No fix" alarm on the gps.

At this time the macbook runs for 24-26 hours and than hangup without any warnings.

It could be a memory leak in the driver itself, that over time it just kills the mac. You might be able to use Activity Monitor and look at the memory allocations over time to see if that's the case. I'm not sure if the driver will show up as a distinct process, though. Have you tried contacting the driver manufacturer to see if they know of any issue with long-term (in your case, 24 hours) stability?

I wonder too if after 24 hours something rolls over in the driver and causes it to lock up.

Sven,

By any chance are you using a Keyspan USA-19HS USB/serial adapter to connect your Furuno GP30 to your Mac?

If so, download the correct driver for this device and Mac OSX 10.6 from this page:
Keyspan drivers
(It's the fifth line on this page.)

Hi Sven,
I have a Miltech AIS receiver that uses the Future Technologies serial port. I have not experienced the hang with this driver or device.

Best.
