It was very interesting that Garmin has announced that all their software will be Mac OS X Tiger compatable by years end. It has always been a pain to keep a pc in my house just to load maps and charts onto my 60c as well as updates for both this unit and my 17n antenna on my boat. If this is old news I'm sorry I just became a member here. Read more from the Apple website under Macworld conference San Francisco this January.

The missing Logbook

Hello,
I think that most of the users would like to have an integrated logbook, which automatically saves all waypoints plus infos about changing weather conditions or wind conditions with a filter function and that can contain more individual Infos such as Fuel consumption, Water etc.
I hope that GPSNavX will have that one day.
In the meantime, I would like to know, how other GPSNavX-users use a logbook today. Is there any software for Mac osX available?
If not, do you transfer the Data to another Program like Word or Excel?
Is there a way to transfer the Data automaticaly?

Sudden motion sensor issues

I've noticed that all of the newer mac laptops are touted as containing sudden motion sensors to instantly park the heads in the event of a sudden fall. Has anyone tried using an SMS equipped laptop for navigation in rough weather? Apple's advertising claims that the heads remain parked until the computer senses that it is level again. I'm apprehensive that this feature could turn out to be disastrous in stormy weather. Can the feature be disabled if necessary?

Hi,
I just installed GPSNAVX and it works fine on my ibook G4, but I have no idea how and where I can download Grib data.
Does anybody know, where I can download such files, especially for the mediterranian and the winward Islands?

From the GPSNavX team comes...
MacWX gives access to thousands of OCENS WeatherNet products. Using the MacWX application you graphically select the specific weather data you want. The OCENS WeatherNet emails you with the timely weather products you have requested.
Categories of available OCENS WeatherNet products include:
* Buoy
* Graphical Buoy Charts
* GRIB (including Theyr High resolution)
* Ice
* Nexrad
* Ocean Charts
* Pro Services
* Satellite Imagery
* Text Forecasts
* Weather Charts (BuoyWeather.com)
High Resolution (1/12th of a degree) GRIB files (Surface Wind) can be used with both MacENC and GPSNavX. Other products can be displayed in the Preview application.
An OCENS WeatherNet subscription is $99 (includes MacWX for OS X). OCENS WeatherNet products are typically less than US$1.00.

I was at the London Boat Show last week, and wanted to catch up with the guys at the Nasa Marine Electronics stand
As well as buying one of their AIS engines for use with GPSNavX, I also had a chat with them about MacSailing.net. Apparently they're Mac users, but weren't aware that their AIS engine was compatible with GPSNavX.
However, hopefully they'll be visiting MacSailing.net once the Boat Show is over.

Internet via cell phones

My partner and I are going cruising for the first time starting in a month or two (Gulf of Mexico, US east coast, Bahamas). We want to find the best way to have internet access on our ibook while moving around so much, and right now I'm thinking a cell phone data plan would be the best way to go.
From all I've seen so far, it looks like the only way to go provider-wise is Cingular because a) the ibook doesn't have a pcmcia slot, b) Cingular hasn't shut off internet-via-bluetooth-phones like Verizon has, and c) their Edge service looks to be available all along the Gulf and East coasts (except the Cape Hatteras area).
Anyone have suggestions? Anything above incorrect to your knowledge?

ENC Charts

For those that know way more than I (TTKWMTI), something is puzzling me. Have only recently gotten into navigation... but I think I see something very odd.
ENC charts come from NOAA, and from what I've read, started being "created" several years ago. Yet, for some reason I find certain significant holes close to home (NYC).
Imagine a rectangular area bounded by Wood Hole, Chatham, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard... mostly blank. Imagine most of the southern, ocean facing shore of Long Island. No ENC coverage. Without pouring over the whole set, I gotta believe there are other holes just as significant close to other areas than sailors visit.
I'm sort of shocked; for a variety of reasons, from a technology standpoint, vector charts are the way to go, but it's hard to convince anyone if there are such "holes." Anyone know more about this...
