  AIS Receiver
Posted by: Jack Janos - May 18, 2005 13:09 - Forum: MacENC & GPSNavX - Replies (8)

I just ordered & received the AIS Receiver from NASA-UK and am trying to figure out if it is possible to hook it up & work on my 300mhz Mac G3 Wallstreet Powerbook(PB). This PB has a built-in serial port which my GPS uses but how do I hook up the AIS receiver which also requires a serial port? I have a USB PCMCIA card also installed in this PB which the Keyspan USB-to-Serial adapter can be plugged into. Can I plug the AIS receiver via the Keyspan adapter into this PB USB card and will GPSNavX be able to read the NMEA info. from BOTH serial ports at the same time? This Powerbook looks just like the one on the GPSNavX Home Page.

Looking for review of Alan (Midland) Neptune DSC VHF
Posted by: cyberhusky - May 18, 2005 02:08 - Forum: Hardware - No Replies

As I want to install AIS on my 24 ft sailing boat I also need a DSC VHF.
I have checked several models and the one I consider to buy (price and features) is the Alan (Midland) Neptune DSC VHF.

It has NMEA I/O plus GPS connector and external speaker possibilty.

So has anybody read a test or review about this VHF? Thx.

  S-57 ENC's availability
Posted by: GPSNavX - May 12, 2005 22:11 - Forum: MacENC & GPSNavX - Replies (2)

I know the S-57 ENC's are available in the United States..

http://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/enc/index.htm

Can you please respond/post with the links to other sources for ENC's. Thanks. Hopefully they are FREE in other countries like they are in the United States.

There is no doubt that S-57 Vector charts are the future of marine charting.

Soon I will have big news about S-57 ENC support for the Mac.

  Suggestion
Posted by: Jack Janos - May 11, 2005 02:38 - Forum: MacENC & GPSNavX - Replies (2)

When a route is shown on the displayed chart, the yellow box at each waypoint SHOULD ALSO SHOW THE BEARING & DISTANCE TO THE NEXT WPT. It you just want to see the WPT name, you should be able to uncheck the "Show Selected" in the Routes menu & the bearing & distance info. should dissappear. This is standard proceedure in any charting class. Just showing rhumb lines without this info. is considered not very good chartwork.

  GPSNavX 3.28 released
Posted by: ReeferJon - May 11, 2005 00:20 - Forum: MacENC & GPSNavX - Replies (2)

GPSNavX 3.28 released:

Note: Requires OS X 10.3 or later

Changes/Fixes since version 3.20:

- Satellite strength bars are now drawn in the correct colors (Red or Green) for OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

- GPS position data that is redundant or latent will be discarded.

- Center to position frequency will be limited to about a second.

- $__MWV wind/speed NMEA sentence interpreted for the Instruments panel.

GPSNavX performs very well on OS X 10.4 (Tiger), the rendering and scrolling speed are greatly enhanced. I recommend the upgrade. Article about the Quartz Imaging system improvements..

  Transfering Routes
Posted by: Jack Janos - May 9, 2005 00:48 - Forum: MacENC & GPSNavX - Replies (2)

Why can't I transfer a route from my Garmin to GPSNavX? Will GPSNavX ever be able to do this? Other charting systems seem to be able to do this quite easily (including my old OS9 NavimaQ).
Also, when you try to import Waypoints from your Garmin, it imports every damn one in the Garmin. Why cant you select only specific waypoints to import? Is there a future version of GPSNavX that might address these issues?

  GPSNavX on 10.4 (Tiger)
Posted by: GPSNavX - May 6, 2005 17:42 - Forum: MacENC & GPSNavX - Replies (1)

Most impressive is how must faster the chart scrolling and rendering is. Well worth the upgrade.

Future versions of GPSNavX will take advantage on 10.4 such as being able to sync waypoints, routes and track data.

  Testing reallife GPSNavX this weekend.
Posted by: cyberhusky - May 4, 2005 14:42 - Forum: MacENC & GPSNavX - No Replies

Hi,
from tomorrow to sunday I will extensively test GPSNavX (12" iBook) on the Netherlands seas!
And next Wednesday I will have a Keynote presentation about Nautical charts and computers on sailing boats. Plus I will do a life demo of GPSNavX.
Is there a possibility to have a beta version of ENC enabled GPSNavX, so that I can demonstrate ENC maps? Or is there any other possibility to show ENC charts on Mac computers? On PCs there is dENCshow.
Thx.
