It is possible to track ships anywhere in the world if you can find an IP based AIS NMEA data server for a specific region. I only know of that server for the US.
And of course if you have your own AIS receiver you could broadcast its data stream to the world with MacENC using the TCP/IP NMEA data server.

provides a rather large and rapidly growing list of possibilities using the shipplotter software, which is, sadly only Windows based software.

Seeing what is being done on the Windows side with Shipplotter makes me realize that pretty well anyone lurking on this list could motivate yachtmarine.com to add a tab for Mac based AIS servers, or start their own.
In my own case, I am pretty much content to have the internal stub antenna providing me with all of the AIS targets I need to know about in my own locality.....(grin).....
If a Mac OS X based AIS analog of "Trainspotting" appeals to you, you have the technology available to you.
