Title: how does GPSNAVX hand off from one raster map to another?
#1
I'm land testing GPSNAVX and I'm not quite seeing how one raster map is handed to another like i've seen in other products.

When I'm doing live travel via GPS and the travel exits one map does the system know which one to connect to (assuming I have all posible maps loaded?).

The features of GPSNAVX are great but I'm not sure if this is a better solution then POLARNAVY. I'm traveling the great lakes and there 101 raster maps to know in my area.

thanks for constructive comments.

GPSNavX will automatically load the most detailed chart when a GPS is connected and "Auto Open" on the "File" menu is selected. Many other ways to open charts in GPSNavX ..

- Double click on a chart file (.kap,.cap,.nos) in a Finder folder.
- Use the Chart List window via "Open Charts..." menu-item on the "File" menu.
- Use the Chart List window via "Open Charts..." [Control] [click].
- [Control] [click] and select "Open Detailed."
- Select "Chart Bounds" tool on the Chart Settings panel and double click inside or outside bounds.
- Select "Auto Open.." menu-item on the "File" menu.
- Select a "Previously opened chart from the "File" menu.

I don't believe Polarnavy supports the official Canadian Great Lakes encrypted BSB 4/5 Charts that come from CHS (Via X-Traverse or Fugawi).

Neither product costs very much so one could certainly use both.

Thanks Great info.

I was hoping AUTOPEN would solve the need of map handoffs, I just could replicate it sitting here in my home 200 miles from the lake!

Thanks again.

Yes you can duplicate it with the GPS Simulator. See section in Tips and Tricks.

this is wonderful, i'm sold. took me a only a minute to figure this out.

This prompts some more questions

1. I imported a route I drew up in Polar and although the way points show up the route lines disappear after the first time I change scale. Is this to be expected?

2. when running the Detroit and St. Clair river the way the detailed maps are there is much switching between detailed maps. As the next map comes up the scale is changed. On the previous map I was watching 100% and now it's off to something that shows the whole map like 6%. How can I lock in a scale?

3. What if the scale I'm getting with AUTOPEN is not what I want (again the rivers are two tight and switch maps to much)...doe I need to go off AUTO and have to select the map I want?

thanks again for your time. This is sweet for the $$$.

1. Save routes, restart GPSNavX. Recent bug fix for next release.

2. GPSNavX does not change the zoom scale (%) when loading charts (not maps). Unless "Fit In Window" is checked in the GPSNavX Preferences. That being said each raster chart can have a unique scale (i.e. 1:20,000, 1:40,000, etc.). GPSNavX does not attempt to maintain the scale between chart loading. Very different from MacENC which does maintain a user selected scale.

3. Sure you can turn off Auto Open and manually choose the chart you want. "Position" in drop down list in the Chart List accessed on the "File" menu via "Open Chart..." will list only charts with your GPS position on it.

I often get asked about "Maps". Our marine navigation software does not support Maps...

One would use Maps for driving or hiking.

ha, I understand the term usage.

Based on your reply in #1 can you in fact SAVE ROUTES in some way with the demo, or is this simply the work round to the bug in the live version?

EDIT: I also forgot to mention I am having trouble changing the speed in the GPS under simulation. I've check this behavior in both my Macbook and a fresh install on my iMac...is there a work around or logic I'm missing? Every now and then I get it but 99% of the time it will not change when I want...

Demo version does not allow saving waypoints or routes.

Not sure about changing simulator speed. Not having any trouble here. Course will not change until speed is greater than 0.4 knots.
