Title: Ruggedize Macbook Pro for sailing
#1
Hi,

I am to sail arround the world alone, I leave Norway in 2 months, and will be sailing the next 4 years. Any tips on accessories for my MacBook Pro to make it more rugged?

Thanks
Best Regards

One thing I would recommend is using a SSD (solid state) drive. It's the drives that fail most often. SSD is immune to shock and magnetic fields.

I have had good luck with a silicone keyboard cover. My MacBook doesn't have backlight keys and a high contrast white with black lettering allows the screen to provide enough illumination of the cover to read in low light.

Won't stop the ocean, but does provide some extra protection from droplets and salt on the keys themselves. Fits tight and prevents long term screen rubbing from kbd keys, assuming your macbook lasts long enough to have that problem (takes a few years).

hope this helps,

Hi Markus,

If you do get an external SSD as GPSNavX recommended, partition it into two drives; then download Carbon Copy Cloner and make the first partition bootable. Use the second partition to backup everything else. That way, you can restore onto another Mac if necessary.
