Title: Sea map software for planning only
#1
Hi

I'm looking for a in price affordable software to do sailing trip planing on my MacBook with SnowLoepard. So I don't want navigate with my laptop on the boat.

Does MacENC and/or GPSNacX run without GPS signal? Can I use it offline at home?

Any other recommendation to have sea maps on OS X?

Thanks for any hints

MacENC and GPSNavX work fine as planning tools on Mac. No GPS receiver is required for planning.

Richard,

If you already have a Garmin GPS charting unit, you may also want to consider Garmin Home Port (sold in the App store).

If you do not sail in US waters, the cost of local charts may well exceed that of the software.

There are various free NOAA charts you can get for USA waters, they are pretty good. charts.noaa.gov

If you have interest in international regions and/or you like Navionics vector charts -- the same content used on chart plotters via SD or CF chip -- then you may wish to sign up for X-Traverse.com (a service from my company Fugawi).

If you get MacENC, the list of possible charts to download to your computer is at:

http://x-traverse.com/our-pricing?platform=2&software=9

The instructions for downloading and getting the charts into the MacENC library starts on page 6 of:
