"iNavX" development is well underway. iNavX will work stand alone using the iPhone's built in positional capabilities or using MacENC NMEA via TCP/IP. Since iPhones don't have any removable media, charts will come from Chart Servers such as NOAA's. iNavX will be available at Apple's iPhone application store which will be directly accessed on the iPhone. More details as the come available.

It should be noted iNavX will run on an iPod Touch just as an iPhone. So for those who do not need the cell phone capability save some $$$ and get an iPod Touch.

Any chance the dock connector could be used to interface with a USB GPS? (Could be a "patch" to the official version in case the SDK doesn't have an API for it).

Charts transfer could be done via WiFi when at home (from the LAN). Charts could then be saved on the iPhone by the app. This would be important for me as I navigate in waters for which no public charts are available over the internet. 8 or 16 (soon 32?) GB of storage should be ok for a certain area (e.g. going on sailing vacation around the Baleares islands) even if raster charts are used.

The gomite locogps looks very promising! Also the locogps Wifi a portable GPS which sends its data via WiFi instead of Bluetooth.

Geomite is awaiting approval from Apple for their GPS devices.

Both GPS should be available by summer 2008. Unfortunately their site doesn't show any info about the GPS anymore.
I think they will redesign the GPS to work with Bluetooth as version 2.0 of the iPhone will have much more features of Bluetooth connectivity.

iNavX Chart: Looking forward to that.

The reason my iBook G3 is available for the boat & GPSNavX is my wife has an iPhone. I won't be able to trade back <g>, but planning for June.

But I'll have to supplement the puck USB GPS receiver; does the BT-368i Bluetooth GPS Receiver seem like a good unit?

Looks like iPhone is equivalent to an early G4 Mac. Able to run NavX (rasters), MacENC (vector) not so.

With the 2008 WWDC just days away, and rumors about the new iPhone flying at a fever pitch (it even looks like a reasonable possibility it could have onboard GPS), I'm wondering if there are any tidbits Rich could drop on the ongoing development of iNavX? I'm very much looking forward to it-- it would be a very nice addition to my onboard navigation arsenal.

I suppose this iNavX but what I'm more interested now is the NMEA TCP/IP data transfer.

I know that the current versions of MacENC can transfer GPS data via TCP/IP protocol. But how canI set up my MacBook and my iPhone version 1 to see the data via WiFi?

I have used VNC which worked great, but I think the other way seems to be faster.

iNavX has a screen to configure the TCP/IP NMEA configuration. Very similar to MacENC's related TCP/IP configuration screen.

MacENC (or any number of Windows nav apps) will be the NMEA server and iNavX will be NMEA client. One can have as many NMEA clients as they like.

iNavX also works stand alone using the iPhone/iPod location services.

Once iNavX is connected to MacENC it can see and display all the NMEA data in a user configurable table.

I expect iNavX to show up on the US iPhone apps store within a couple weeks.

Yes over the next months we will work with the international chart suppliers to set up a chart servers for iNavX. Charts for iPod and iNavX must come over an internet connection.

This first look is impressive! Compared to a lot of the drivel I'm seeing coming out of the Apps store, this is an application that hints at the real potential of the iPhone. My only complaint is that you've made the wait for my new iPhone that much more painful.

One question: When using iNavX in standalone mode, can I load the relevant charts directly onto my iPhone or I am I dependent on a remote chart server and an internet connection?

Yes you can "preload" relevant charts when you have a wifi or cell connection for your iPhone / iPod. Charts are just like songs on your iPhone. Once loaded they are there until you remove them. Typically one sails in area covered by less than a couple dozen charts.

Here in Luxembourg, the iPhone 3G isn't available yet. Probably later this year.

There are 2 other great apps for the iPhone:

Fizz Weather with Satellite images and forecast for 5 days
and PocketPedia (well not so interesting for sailors, but for all people buying/collecting books) which works great with Bookpedia (now my complete library is in my pocket, no more buying the same book twice) ;-)
