I recently got my new MBP, installed MacENC and am getting ready to connect to my Garmin GPSMap 210 via a Keyspan USB Serial Adaptor (USA-19HS). I am not a techie and reading the documentation with the Keyspan is a bit confusing to me. Given the age of this Garmin, any reason to think it will not work with OS-X given that it is only sending/receiving NMEA data? It does have the necessary wires in the cable for NMEA out and in.

Hi Ken,
I downloaded a Garmin GPSMap 210 manual and it looks like it supports NEMA 183 v2.0 alright. The power/data cable has the needed black (ground), blue (NEMA out), and brown (NEMA in) wires in the harness.
See pages 65 and 66.

I'm sure the wires are there. My concern is based on the fact that the Keyspan pdf manual harps on being sure that any software is compatible with OS X. Certainly MacENC is but I didn't know if any software in the Garmin itself might conflict with the OS. If all it's doing is sending/receiving NMEA sentences, then may I assume there is not an issue?

Yes, the GPS is just transmitting the NEMA sentences (at 4800 BAUD). Keyspan provides the driver for OS X and MacENC does the rest.
Based on the NEMA sentences in the manual, it should work alright with MacENC.
The only problem that I can see that you might have is the compatibility of the connectors between the Keyspan and the GPSMap210 cable (male-female-null modem).

We'll be splitting the NMEA wires from the Garmin cable (leaving the power to the DC panel) and adding a serial connection to connect to the Keyspan. Thanks for all the help.

The important step is to install the Keyspan OS X driver and select the correct port..
MacENC Help - Connecting a GPS
NMEA data from the GPS only needs transmit and ground.

I'm having same difficulty. Installed Keyspan OSX driver, and MBP "sees" the adapter in the Keyspan application window. Likewise, green led on adapter is flashing, so I assume it's communicating well w/ MBP. However, when I hook up the garmin 182 gps, nothing. I know the gps is outputting properly, as it's lat/long is showing up on screen of vhf radio, also connected to the garmin output. So, I'm assuming the problem is not in the output of the gps. Is this controlled from the Mac or the gps?

Make sure you are selecting the port KeySerial1 and rate 4800 and type Garmin in the GPS panel Settings drawer which is accessed via "Connect" on the "GPS" menu, then by pressing the "Settings" drawer.

All working great. Problem was that I hadn't properly set the port from within MacENC. Now have the gps and AIS both running through the keyspan, no problems. Thanks for the help
