MacENC is a marine charting and navigation application for Macintosh OS X that allows the use of the readily available free NOAA ENC vector marine charts...

MacENC has all the great features and ease of use found in GPSNavX, but works seamlessly with the NOAA ENC vector charts. Scroll from one chart to the next. Click on any NavAid or other chart object and get full details in the object browser.

MacENC will be available for purchase on August 1, 2005 (via Kagi). The MacENC CD will include all the NOAA ENC vector charts in addition to MacENC. The price for the MacENC CD will be US$99.95 (including first class postal shipping and one year of updates).

Like GPSNavX, MacENC will continually be improved and updates will be sent out frequently via an email.

So, there are now two separate apps, right? Hmmm, my initial thoughts are ones of slight disappointment. Why two apps?

I too am disappointed that we now have 2 different apps. However, given the difficulty of implimenting 2 differrent rendering engines, I can understand the difference. What I do find vexing is that on some level I view this application (even though the name has been changed) as GPSNavX version 4.0.

As such I am curious as to whether or not there will be an upgrade path for current GPSNavX owners. At the very least I would like there to be a download version that was software only for those of us who are willing to go and get the charts from NOAA on our own...

Not for nothing, but it would be nice if the loyal customers who have paid for the old app would get some kind of thank you for their financial support and for submitting suggestions that (hopefully) are helpful to the developers.

When MacENC is ordered via Kagi you will recieve a download link to MacENC in addition to receiving a CD with MacENC and the NOAA charts. While some are able to download the 300MB file of compressed NOAA charts, many do not have a fast enough connection.

US$99 for an S-57 ENC navigation application is an absolute bargain. Compare with the Windows counter parts.

MacENC has been under development for over a year. While it may share some of the look and feel of GPSNavX it is a totally new application designed to take advantage of the S-57 objects. MacENC will continue to be improved building on the plusses of vector charts.

GPSNavX will remain and be improved/supported as raster charts still are quite common.

Great to hear! S57 support came faster than expected. :-)
At first I was disappointed too that it is a new program, but as GPSNavX team stated it has been in development since over 1 year and that it´s a new written program. So a second program isn´t that bad as it appears as it looks like the program works quite the same way as GPSNavX. So no big learning curve here.
As for the price it´s really ok!
If you look at the ideas wrote in another thread (ideas for GPSNavX) I would even pay more for it!
The only real problem I have is if MacENC will compatible with S-57 (ENC) from private companies. As original professional (commercial navigation) S-57 charts are quite expensive, several 100-1000 Euro per region.
On the other hand the French SHOM hydrographic institution wants from 2006 on publish ENC charts which are cheaper than paper charts, as the new French laws (2005) allows for electronic charts instead of paper charts!

Hello All,
I'm new to this group. Will this program work with the Digital Nautical Charts. They are Vector Charts that work on PCs using either "CaptMosaic" or "ICE".

I'm looking for a program to use with my Mac that will work with my world wide portfolio of the DNC charts.

I totally agree.

I know that you've put a lot of time into the new program and you deserve compensation.

However, when I bought MacGPS nearly two years ago, I asked if you would support the NOAA charts with it. You said yes, and I think even stated that support was forthcoming on a couple of occasions, never mentioning a new program at twice the cost.

I understand that it had to become another program and take much more work.

BUT, I do feel you owe your adopters of MacGPS a less expensive upgrade than full-price for the above reasons. I also think offering it on a less expensive basis, perhaps without the charts as an upgrade would tempt current users to upgrade. Right now I'm not going to change, there isn't any reason to. And I feel a little let down by your lack of consideration to a loyal installed user base.

I do not produce a product called "MacGPS" so I cannot speak for what the developer of that program told you.

MacENC is not an upgrade to GPSNavX, but a totally new program that takes complete advantage of the S-57 vector ENC's. For example you can see a "light list" of any S-57 chart and scroll right to any object on the chart.

Raster charts are not going away and I will continue to improve GPSNavX. Both S-57 and BSB charts have their uses so I would not try to sway anyone to move over to S-57 vector charts.

Has MacENC actually been released yet? I know that GPSNavX's last email stated that it was available from 1st August, but there's been no subsequent announcement... actually this forum's been pretty quiet too...

Hope there's going to be a demo version...

Yes MacENC 1.0 was shipped both physically and electronically on Monday August 1st. Even made Kagi's top 50 list, ranking #6 for weekly sales!! Thank you!!

Now being MacENC is a 1.0 there is still room for improvement. I expect MacENC 1.1 will be released this Monday will several improvements based on great customer feedback.

When I get a breather I will put together a demo version of MacENC.

Installed v 1.2 today on the Mac mini, 1.42 Ghz, 1 GB RAM. So far it's only installed onshore, and I hope to have the setup aboard this week for a trial run. The most obvious thing is that with 4 cells loaded (Casco Bay A & B, Portland Harbor A & B) basic operations (zoom in, etc) seem to give me the spinning beach ball every time before completing; very slow. Reducing the display to a single cell loaded improves the zoom a LOT. Likely it's not intended to have many open at once, though that might be sueful for route planning?

No other apps running. I don't know if this is normal for a mini with this app. The detail is good, though as we know, it bears no resemblance to Maptech raster scanned charts at all, especially with respect to terrestrial features and contours.

Anyone else using it so far?

Like GPSNavX, MacENC will be continually improved. Look for significant improvements in S-57 ENC rendering in the near future. An ENC is like a CAD drawing, made up of thousands of features (objects) that are made up of hundreds of lines.

There are lots of advantages with this format - layers, antialiasing, built in navaid list, etc. The downside is the rendering to the screen does take longer than raster charts.

In playing with MacENC I have noticed that objects have certain properties not related so much to navigation as they are related to rendering. I am referring spcifically to the "Show below resolution 1:x" which determines when an object gets rendered.

Does anyone know what the logic behind continuing the paradigm of having charts over simply creating a superset of datapoints that are rendered when the engine hits a certain resoution? From a user perspective, it feels like (and this is just me guessing) a significant piece of the rendering overhead comes from this cell situation. This problem could be obviated if the data was a little less chart oriented and a little more data oriented. One option would be to convince all of the hydrographic offices to change their standard again (that was humor). A more realistic concept would be to write an application that would walk all the data sets in the cells and flatten the information so that rather than rendering a specific cell, the application would be rendering just the points within a given quadrangle at a given resolution.

The data set would have to be recreated every time NOAA updated the info, but if you had already written the application to walk the NOAA data, that shouldn't be a big deal.

Does that make sense or am I losing my marbles?

No you are not losing your marbles. The S-57 ENC organizes the data such that each cell (chart) is in a different file (in a folder under the catalog file). These cells are made up of 1000's of features (objects) that are made up of 1000's of lines or points. Each feature has a minimum scale at which it will be displayed.

Since MacENC is designed to work straight from the (NOAA) S-57 ENC data it is definitely oriented towards the cells. It would be both memory and time prohibitive to load every cell and flatten it into one giant cell.

What some chart app developers have done is make their own version of the S-57 ENC data and call it SENC. Instead of organizing it by cells, they have organized it by what is displayed at any given scale. The downside is now these apps require you to use their proprietary versions of this S-57 ENC data which they charge for. CapN 8.0 is a good example of this. So not only do you have to pay $400+, but you have to pay for the charts!!

I wanted the MacENC users to be able to use the very latest S-57 data without having to pay for a special proprietary version of the *free* data.

Each release of MacENC will continue to improve upon rendering speed performance.

Not to ask a brutally stupid question, but does the application check every point to determine if it should render it or is there some way of treating it like a database and rendering only a found set of objects that are meant to be displayed at a given resolution?
If there were a way to index certain fields it might reduce the volume of what needs to be rendered significantly thereby reducing the load on the application and speeding up the rendering. Of course now that I've written it down it looks painfully like I am stating the obvious.

That would be horribly inefficient to check every point. So yes MacENC queries the cell (chart) for features (objects) to be rendered for the selected scale.
