Has anyone use iNavX for the iPod Touch with Coastal Explorer to provide NMEA data to the iPod Touch for positioning?

iNavX mentions Coastel Explorer but I can't find detailed information

Apparently the iNavX website used to claim that it would work with Coastal Explorer, but that was not quite true...

Both iNavX and Coastal Explorer are capable of sending and receiving data over a TCP/IP network connection. However, both programs act as "clients" that are capable of connecting to a "server". Since neither program can act as a server, a third program must be used to fill that role. GPSGate is apparently one such program (and possibly the only one commercially available).

I've never actually used GPSGate and iNavX together, so I'm afraid I can't provide all the details. We might go ahead and set something up here, though, and I'll post again if we do.

Also, if there is enough interest in this sort of thing, we will consider offering something like GPSGate, but more tightly integrated with Coastal Explorer (and easier to setup). Just let us know!

As a satisfied user of both applications ( CE & iNavX ), I hope to see the time that they will interoperate. Let me know if there is anything I can do to move this issue along

Yes you can use GPSGate to be the NMEA data server. Both Coastal Explorer and iNavX can be NMEA data clients. XGate is relatively easy to setup. Basically you select the com port your NMEA talker is connected to (i.e. GPS), then select the ip and port you want GPSGate to transmit the NMEA data to. Set Coastal Explorer and iNavX to listen to that IP addres and port. Email inavx at mac dot com for more assistance with the configuration.

I remember long ago reading about linking iNavX with programs such as Coastal Explorer (which I use) and was excited about the prospect. I googled up this from a CNET SW download page.

Using the iPhone's or iPod Touch's WiFi connection, iNavX can also act as a repeater for popular marine navigation software that supports NMEA data over TCP/IP such as MacENC or other MS Windows marine navigation applications (i.e. Coastal Explorer, Expedition).

I suspect that this was the type of info that prompted the post on CE support forum that I copied here. That is not at all what you were referring to in the last post about iNavX and CE both listening tot the same talker (e.g GPS) . However, I am guessing that GPSGate with it's many virtual serial ports and Coastal Explorer with it's ability to setup multiple ports as talkers/listeners would allow CE instruments (NMEA stream) => GPS Gate, which in turn would send it out over TCP/IP where it would be available to iNavX. Is that about how it would go? I am excited by the the possibility. So with a small inverter running a wifi hub (apple express) gizmos will start to communicate and the iPhone in a ziplock bag on deck will be repeater for all the NMEA data that is being channeled into CE on the ASUS 1000HE from the Tack Tic NMEA hub.

We have since updated iNavX description once we learned Coastal Explorer stand alone could not be a NMEA data server, but only a receiver.

Both Coastal Explorer and iNavX can be setup to listen/receive NMEA data over TCP/IP. It is GPSGate on Windows (or MacENC on Mac) that must be configured to connect to a physical serial port(s) and then repeat that data to a TCP/IP port. So something like this:

GPS (or other NMEA data) -> Com port -> GPSGate -> TCP/IP Port

wireless connection ->

TCP/IP Port -> iNavX
TCP/IP Port -> Coastal Explorer

Typically one created an AdHoc network to achieve this.

Thanks for the feedback, I look forward to getting iNavX talking to other apps. It's potential usefulness as a remote repeater on deck is huge. (In it's ziplock bag.)
