Title: Confused on RADAR w/MacENC and GPS navX
#1
I understand that radar will integrate.....but what does this "integration" mean?........I read in another post that the software won't "plot the scan". Please explain in terms a newbie to radar will understand. I am trying to research building a system based on my MAC and want to buy the Mac ENC or GPS navX software. What will it do and what won't it do? Will navX and ENC both work with radar or just one of them?

Both support NMEA-0183 data from RADAR. What this means is they can plot tracked targets and the cursor. Specifically you would want a RADAR that supported the RSD, TLL and TTM NMEA-0183 data.

To see an example of the behavior, run GPSNavX or MacENC and select "Simulator" on the GPS menu. You will see an example of the cursor and a tracked target on the chart.

GPSNavX and MacENC won't display the radar trace (the raw image data from the radar), and therefore won't do away with the requirement for a dedicated radar display. However, if your radar supports MARPA, then any targets you select on the display will be displayed on the chart in MacENC / GPSNavX in a similar fashion to AIS targets, via NMEA.

There are some some chart-plotters and PC software apps which do support direct attached radar radomes; using RadarPC devices by Japanese manufacturer Koden. These are frequently rebranded by Nobeltec et al.

ReeferJon, that was the easiest best explanation I have received....perfect. Is there any software for Mac?

Thanks

There's nothing on the Mac that I'm aware of that supports Radar PC.

Greetings - newbie here.

Just getting ready to set up Mac ENC on a large trawler using MacMinis. Switching over from Coastal Navigator.

I'm having the same frustration as a number of people it seems, with regard to having no way to incorporate our Koden network radar. It does not output NMEA data and so far I can't find any way to interface it with the Mac.

Since threads on this topic have been going on for a few years I'm just wondering if anyone has yet found any way at all to view their broadband radar using OS X? (via Mac ENC or otherwise).

It's the one thing I'd miss in switching from Coastal Nav.

Can anyone recommend a SPECIFIC brand or model radar receiver(s) that will work with my MacENC program on my MB Pro? Why go with radar if you can go with a cheaper AIS system?

RADAR will show vessels and obstructions that AIS will not. I have heard good reports about Furuno RADAR. You will want to confirm it supports NMEA-0183 output for compatibility with MacENC.
