I was having a Sunday morning surf, and just came across the Lloyds Maritime Information web site. Amongst various interesting marine data sources they provide is an AIS network, covering what looks like hundreds of ports world wide.

Of particular interest is the AIS Free service that they provide, with provides data for the major ports. I've registered for this service and as soon as I get more information, will update you.

My big question is can it stream / play AIS log data in MacENC? I'd imagine it probably won't (as the IP stream would be huge), but will be interesting to play with..

Does anyone know of a compact scanner that will work with a Mac? I have a very good Canon flatbed scanner, but a flatbed, even the 'slim ones' take up too much room on the boat. I'm thinking either a handheld that you 'wipe' over the original, or maybe something like a Visioneer (which doesn't have drivers for a Mac). It would be nice to be able to scan documents, and even 'borrowed' charts while cruising.

When used with the Shipmodul Miniplex-Lite Mulitiplexer and OS X 10.5 must be operated at a rate of 57,600. So if you have selected 4,800 or 38,400 in a GPSNavX or MacENC GPS or AIS panel Settings drawer please select a rate of 57,600 instead.

I’ve fixed a bug with subordinate current stations where the slack times were computed incorrectly.

I’ve added a tinted section underneath the curve on the Month view to distinguish the tides better.

I’ve implemented a way to reset a saved station when the station’s name has been changed in the harmonics data files.

I’ve added many more U.S. subordinate current stations (about 2,000 of them). I took them off the NOAA website, but they are of dubious accuracy as NOAA is in the process of remeasuring all the current reference stations, and the subordinate stations depend on these updates. NOAA expects this job to be done in 20 years or so...

I've been running Parallels, but have been less than happy since upgrading to Leopard. Parallels seems to lock up frequently and several applications will not run. I assume these may be Leopard related issues they're working on, but right now it's irritating at the least. Does anyone have experience with Fusion? Any better/worse? I'd prefer not to have to run any Bill Gates stuff, but a few applications I don't have a choice.

Solid state drives in laptops is the future. It certainly will be a good move for marine use - lower power and better reliability

They import fine into MacENC using the "Add ENC Catalog". MacENC will create a Catalog.031 file for these charts.

Keep in mind that in order to see them you must set the zoom scale to the same scale as the charts (in this case 'Harbor').

After a paper published in french “Voile magazine“ (issue #143) about digital navigation with a PC or a Chart plotter, I have posted to the magazine a response to draw attention also to GPS NavX, Mac ENC and their prefered host hardware, the Apple’s machines.
I am interested by all the informations to install a Mac Mini aboard, specially about power supply for the CPU and a inner comfortable LCD screen 17“ or 19“ because, execpt Carnetix solutions (designed for cars), I have not seen on this forum any detailed descriptions on such installations.
We plan to organize, near Marseille, for this sail magazine, a test of our prefered software with Francis FUSTIER, translator in french of GPSNaX and MacENC. If we could test a MacMini installation to complete a test with MacBook Pro, it will be very nice. Thanks for your contributions.
