Anyone aware of any manufactures making an AIS Rcvr/Antenna that works in a laptop PCI slot? Would appreciate any and all information you might have on same.

Need help bigtime! Anyone have any experience using a Globalstar phone, a Mac (PowerBook G4, OS 10) and Ocens Mail? I used it for a year on my PC, bought all the new Mac versions for my PowerBook, Keyspan U
SB adaptor, etc., followed all the directions, have uninstalled, reinstalled but can't get the Mac and the phone to talk. Any advice deeply appreciated, as we cast off Jan. 1.

Also curious if we can't solve this here whether anyone is or knows a Mac expert in the St. Thomas, USVI area who could troubleshoot this for me.

Suppose you were to advise a friend on buying a used Mac to run either GPSNavX or MacENC, what model would be adequate and why?

Apart from screen redraw time on opening charts is there any compelling advantage in moving up from say, a G4 iBook at 867 Mhz to an Intel based MabBook or Mac Mini?

Does the addition of an AIS receiver shift your choice significantly?

Please refer to the Geekbench score in your reply. The iBook G4 867 has a Geekbench score of 494 while the 8 core Mac Pro 3Ghz has a score of 8581

A new Russian system is launched to rival America's GPS.

MOSCOW (Reuters)—Russia successfully launched a rocket on Tuesday carrying the last three satellites to complete a navigation system to rival America's GPS.


The military-run GLONASS mapping system works over most of Russia and is expected to cover the globe by the end of 2009, once all its 24 navigational satellites are operating.

A space rocket blasted off from Russia's Baikonur cosmodrome on the steppes of neighboring ex-Soviet Kazakhstan, from which Russia rents the facility.

"The launch was carried out smoothly at 10:32 p.m. (1932 GMT)," RIA news agency quoted a spokesman for the Russian space agency as saying. "We expect satellites to separate from the booster on the orbit at 2:24 a.m. (2324 GMT)."

Work on GLONASS—or Global Navigation Satellite System—began in the Soviet Union in the mid-1970s to give its armed forces exact bearings around the world.

The collapse of the Russian economy in the late 1990s drained funds and the plans withered, but President Vladimir Putin has ensured the project is now being lavishly funded from a brimming government budget.

Officials said GLONASS would mainly be used alongside the U.S. global positioning system, which Washington can switch off for civilian subscribers, as it did during recent military operations in Iraq.

A colleague is going to the Sea of Cortez on a bareboat charter in February (lucky him!) and the only electronic charts I could find are from MapTech in PCX format. Anyone know of any charts for the area readable by MacENC?
