Is there a Mac version of something like VMGs' Captains Log? Looks like an interesting way to keep track of things.

I live in Canada and plan to take my cat down the intracoastal to Florida and the Bahamas. Hopefully the boat will eventually end up in the Western Caribbean.
I have no experience or knowledge of electronic charts but have always used macs.
I have the paper charts I need for now, and an old handheld garmin that goes everywhere with me. I have an older powerbook which I'm guessing may not be up to the job.
Which would be best for me----GPSNavX or MacENC?
Where do I get the charts---are they expensive?
What GPS is recommended?
What other bits and pieces would I need?
I think I've got a hint of some of the answers by browsing your site but time is running out if I'm to get the show on the water.
many thanks Tom

Securing laptop onboard

Just came through an unexpectidly feroucious gale, where everything above and below deck that was not well secured ended up somewhere else. My Mac was fortunately in a padded neoprene 'glove', secure in a locker, but it left me wondering how people do secure there laptops onboard in a 'usable' arrangement. The obvious one, one of those laptop tie-down brackets I've seen attached to the chart table, doesn't work for me as my chart table is right under the companionway and way too often tends to get wet.

Looking for the best solution for receiving wifi on our mac while at marina or at anchor. We've not had good luck getting reception (our Toshiba connects much better) and are looking for the most cost effective external set-up.
We saw posts on Panbo.com recommending a Linksys WET54G Bridge and purchased one from Amazon, but haven't been able to get it to work, or even to take commands using the web interface.
The other options we've run across are
http://www.radiolabs.com/products/wireless/waverv.php
http://www.macwireless.com/html/products...plete.html
I was hoping for something that would work with ethernet, possibly using POE so it would be fairly compact. Have friends using low loss coax to an antenna on the mast, but the cable takes up lots of room.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
We're currently in Rock Hall, MD after a three week siesta while our engine was being replaced. Plan to resume cruising this week.
Best regards,
Mark

Garmin 72 and GPSNavX tracks/waypoint transfer problems

Hi
I have bought a Garmin 72 GPS and would like to use it with GPSNavX.
It should replace my old but great Garmin 12, because the 72 is faster and onyl uses 2 batteries instead of 4, plus the marine package includes a cigarette lighter adapter plus a holder
Getting positions from the GPS (72) and navigating with GPSNavX is no problem.
But if I want to transfer tracks/waypoints my GPS shows a wiring problem?
I used to have a serial USB cable (PC type) which works great with a serial driver I found on internet.
The GPSNavX help states for transfering data from/to a GPS one needs a keyspan usb serial adapter which I got this week.
Transfering data from/to my Garmin 12 with keyspan cable works flawlessly, but there's no transfer to my Garmin 72.
I've found this settings on the garmin homepage
http://www.garmin.com/support/faqs/faq.jsp?faq=27
Now I'm confused to what settings I should use with GPSNavX?
Perhaps useful infos:
the data cable (garmin to serial) I use is the same on both Garmin GPS.
It was originally a data cable for the Garmin 12, but accessing NMEA data works with the Garmin 72 too.
Any hints?
Thx a lot in advance
Regards,
Manou

Apple recalls 1,8 million laptop batteries

Apple has issued a recall for 1.8 million PowerBook G4 and iBook G4 Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries that used technology from Sony. Batteries with the Sony technology (used in Apple, Dell, and Sony laptops, among others) have recently been catching fire, with Dell recently recalling 4.1 million batteries.
The recall effects a variety of machines manufactured from October 2003 and August 2006, but does not effect the MacBook or the MacBook Pro, as they contain different battery technology. Yesterday, Apple announced that it would be joining Dell and Lenovo in creating Li-Ion standards.
More information can be found on the battery recall's site.

I've just asked for a new replacement battery, as I don't want my sailing boat going up in flames. See pictures (links) below!
The battery can even explode if your iBook / PowerBook is power off.
Apparently the problem is due to a misproduction run at SONY.
