MacENC and GPSNavX disappear forever
19 March 2019 Francis | 5 Comments

Since 30 September 2018 (*), I already had information regarding the abandonment NAVX Studio LLC for the development of two historical applications created by Richard Ray : GPSNavX and MacENC. The buyers of these applications and iNavX had clearly announced focuse only to the development of iNavX, on iOS and Android. It is likely that applications on Mac no longer had any profitability, especially with the loss of Navionics charts for MacENC.

The announcement is now official, GPSNavX is permanently removed from the AppStore and MacENC will be removed from sale on iNavX website :

Quote:
“Just a heads up on the future of MacENC. [The app] MacENC will not receive any future updates and it will be taken off the market sometime this week. As long as you do not update your Macintosh computer to Mojave, it should continue to function pretty well. However, it is very limited on computers using Mac OS X Mojave.
MacENC Support”

That is. It now remains for Mac only OpenCPN, which is far from the ergonomics and professional quality had yet MacENC. It's really sad !

Autosave waypoints and routes in MacENC
Posted by: antipole - March 14, 2019 07:33 - Forum: MacENC & GPSNavX - No Replies

I love using MacENC for passage planning. I regularly create dozens of waypoints and include them in routes.  Sadly, there is no auto-save of waypoints and routes.  I have lost count of the number of times I have forgotten to save my work and lost it.  Earlier this week I spent a day planning passages for the coming season and forgot to save. Overnight my Mac locked up somehow and I lost it all.

So I have now created a AppleScript to perform saves of the Waypoints and Routes data.

MacENC is scriptable.  (My ship’s log (using FileMaker) collects position, course, speed, wind etc. from MacENC as required.)  However, saving the waypoints and routes is not a scriptable function and I have had to resort to ‘typing’ at MacENC from the script. It is not perfect but it works for me.

Using the system

You can launch MacENC with autosave, which will launch MacENC if not already active.

Every five minutes, the Save Waypoints and Save Routes command will be typed into MacENC.

If there is nothing to save, these commands are deactivated and you will hear a dull Dou! sound.  That cannot be helped - ignore it.

If you want to stop autosaving, just quit the MacENC with autosave program.  If you quit MacENC leaving MacENC with autosave running, that is fine - it will do no harm.

You can download the kit from here.  Unzip the file and find the READ ME instructions within.

My you lose no more work!

Big Grin Long live MacENC!
Posted by: antipole - February 6, 2019 05:59 - Forum: MacENC & GPSNavX - Replies (13)

I note that iNavX Studios are still selling MacENC, which infers they will support it awhile.

I have just obtained confirmation that they have someone working on a 64 bit version.
There have been some delays but the present ETA is end of February.  Of course that could slip again.

iNavX Studios are also taking over the chart store aspects from Fugawi.

Female Sailing Crew for Garbage Patch Research - eXXpedition
Posted by: JanellCClark - January 6, 2019 17:06 - Forum: Great Pacific Garbage Patch - Replies (1)

There's a crew of all female sailors circumnavigating the globe to collect research on 5 of the 6 garbage patches.  They are seeking 300 female volunteers.  I'm thinking of volunteering.  Has anyone else looked into this?

Photo What I saw
Posted by: saltyruss - January 5, 2019 17:41 - Forum: Great Pacific Garbage Patch - Replies (1)

I sailed to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch to see what was there.  I collected some of the plastic trash, collected biological samples of marine life that have adapted to living on plastic, and took photos and videos of what I saw.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch covers an area of about 2000nm wide and 1000nm tall ranging from about 500nm West of the Northern California Coast to a few hundred nm East of Japan.  The largest concentrations of debris are in the Eastern boundary, just off California, and the Western boundary, just South East of Japan.

I could see debris within a few minutes of looking in any direction.   Most of the waste is floating just a few inches under the surface of the water.  It's suspended in this 'floating' state a few inches to a few feet under the surface of the water.  This makes it impossible to see from the air.

You can read more about my voyage on my website: SV Blue Moon

Here are a couple photos of my voyage to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch:

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch - Arrival
Posted by: saltyruss - November 8, 2018 03:55 - Forum: General - Replies (2)

Day 7. I've been at sea for a week since leaving Hawaii. The wind and seas have been favorable for the most part, allowing Blue Moon to move gracefully through the ocean at 7 to 10 knots. The seas have been rough at times and there have been dozens of squalls to sail around if possible or through if not. One night several thunderstorms surrounded Blue Moon with lighting above, around, and in all directions. I sailed for several hours through the night steering to avoid and sailing away from the thunderstorms and at one point finding myself surrounded by thunderstorms and lightning. Once past the thunderstorms I could look back in the distance and watch the light show the lightning displayed behind me.

The University of Hawaii conducts Marine Biology research which includes analysis of the wind, waves, currents and different types of debris in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch to track the location of the debris and where it is concentrated. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch can move around, so it's not always in the same place. Jan Haffner of the University of Hawaii has been sending his updated analysis of where the largest sections of debris are located, and we have just entered the South East corner of the high concentration section of their chart. Hopefully, I will see some debris and be able to send photos today. I will be taking water samples today, and for the next four days, and will conduct other data collection procedures for the various research institutions today as well.

I am currently at 32°32.98'N 149°14.06'W 11/7/2018 08:33:48 Hawaiian Time

Does anyone have any experience with Pactor Dragon modems. Specifically do they live up to their reported upload/download speeds?

Thanks.
