Greetings. I have read some posts that provide guidance on registering windows-based Maptech Chart Kit Companion CDs on a mac, and found these directions:

I have a brand-new Mac Book Pro (lucky me), and three previously unopened chart kit companion cds, all purchased within the last year. I followed the instructions above, downloaded the "Register" application, and when it prompts me to insert a BSB4 or BSB5 chart, I insert the Maptech CD into the drive. It whirls for a moment, then Register gives me a message that "A BSB4 or BSB5 chart CD could not be located". Are the Maptech companion CDs not BSB4 or BSB5? Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to install VMWare Fusion and Windows and register them in Windows? If I do this, can I then access the charts in my Mac OSX?

Thanks in advance for any help...headed to the BVIs next Sunday and am anxious to get this working before I leave (without buying additional digital charts if possible).

The AIS set made by NASA is under half the price of the set made by Comar. I am aware that the latter will work on 'Passage Plus' Software, but am not at all sure as regards the NASA set - I assume so, but prefer not to waste even a hundred pounds, unless someone here has tried it.

What about drivers for the Mac? I run under OS 10.5.6 BTW

I have a lot of charts, both the us dvd supplied by gpsnavx and downloaded encs from uscg- all loaded on my internal hard disk. whenever I start macenc version 6.00 it takes almost five minutes for the first chart to appear. in between, all i have is the spinning beachball. is this normal? should I get rid of some charts? is there any fix for this? I don't remember an interval this long with previous versions, although it seems that with each iteration it gets slower to start. Not critical, but annoying. Macbook Pro 2.16 ghz, macos x 10.5.6

So I have a issue with using my MacENC on the boat. I have a keyspan that gets my GPS data, but my main serial to USB is a edgeport 8, "legacy on the boat from the PC" I want to use my mac for everything, but don't want to blow big bucks for a new muti serial port to USB system.

I don't think there is away around not using windows on Parallels for practor modem / airmail / SSB / weather / etc... but it would be nice to only need to pop that when I want to get gribs and email.

Anyone know if a driver for the edgeport 8? I see that the keyspan makes a 4 serial to single USB, that might be a option, but I have not played with Parallels with windows yet.

Any help / ideas is much appreciated.

On a side note, how about a Mac Mini for the boat computer, with some type of RAID drive with music / movies / backup of computer, living in a water proof case. If the Mini gets wasted, just unpack a spare, and the current backup is good to go......

I'm seriously looking at getting a Dell mini 9 netbook (to install Mac OSX on) and I'm curious if some out there my either know, or be willing to speculate whether MacENC would run on it. For comparison, I find MacENC acceptable on my MacBook (2.16GHz Intel Core2 w/1 GB 667MHz DDR2). By pure numbers it looks to me as though it would be slower, but I'm not sure if that's accurate because they are different proccessors).

Intel® Atom Processor® N270 (1.6GHz/533Mhz FSB/512K cache)
1 GB of DDR2 @ 533MHz
16 GB SSD

I'll likely try it regardless, but I'd be interested in what others have to say.

We would like to take advantage of MacENC's ability to export waypoints. We've a Raymarine unit that uses CMap-NT+ cards. What do I need to read/write the user data from a MacBook ( USB port ) . I can easily handle the CVS translation between the Raymarine data format and the MacENC data format - it's just moving the information from the Mac to the chip that is a stumbling block.

New to the marine electronic environment. In the nav station, I have an NMEA cable coming into the back of our Standard Horizon VHF unit, supplying it with the GPS info. How easy is it to "T" that connection so that I can supply the MacBook with the GPS info via the USB port? I understand that I will need a device to bridge from the NMEA cable and language to the USB port, but I don't know what works well.
