I posted this to the SSCA communication forum, and someone wisely suggested I also post here. Glad they did because I wasn't aware of macsailing.net, and it looks great. Anyway....

We just moved aboard our boat full time. Wife and I are both writers and need good regular reliable internet/email. Sometimes we are in marinas where we can get wifi, but other times we are anchored out and need to tether our MacBook Pro and iBook to our cell phones. We are both at point where our service agreements have expired, and want to get one family plan, with best price/options/support for unlimited data usage tethering our laptops to our cell phones, either bluetooth or USB (bluetooth would be slicker - no cables) or using laptop card for data and getting less fancy cell phones. I have a Palm Treo 700p on Verizon, which works great tethering via bluetooth, but it is almost $170/month with taxes, etc., or more than $2,000/year! Just got her a Blackberry Pearl 8110 on AT&T, figuring if it worked was much less expensive (and can check email on phone without having to fire up laptop), but no Mac support from AT&T and finding third-party modem strings, possible settings, etc. online that actually work has been difficult, to say the least (finally got tethering working this morning, but it is slow....). Any advice on carriers, plans, phones, settings that work best for Macs, Blackberry, etc. greatly appreciated! (we have 30 days to return Blackberry, if it isn't the right answer...) Will be mostly cruising East Coast, with possibly winter months in Caribbean. Thanks!!!!

Are you familiar with this offering from PosiMotion? The question would be is there an API which iNavX can hook into the G-Fi output? I currently use the very reliable NMEA over IP from MacENC but I can see situations where MacENC won't be available to me... and I have no intention of replacing my 1st generation iPhone.

Is there a way to color a track after it has been loaded from a Garmin GPS in gpx format?

On my MacENC the track shows in white, making it difficult to see.

I sail from Falmouth in Cornwall, England, which is the biggest sailing harbour in the south west.

I currently access tide data on my iphone using safari - which is fine if I have internet access... Would love therefore to switch to Ayetides. However the nearest tide date in Mr Tides is Newlyn - a commercial fishing port with no sailors. Is there any chance that Falmouth data could be added to Mr Tides/Aye Tides?

Had some time on the water earlier this week with iNavX and the new iPhone 2.1 software. The course and speed readings seemed much more stable and accurate, and the chart view no longer jumped around the screen nearly as much. Apple's upgraded has improved iNavX's usability considerably. Rich, you must be as pleased as I am.

A friend had a Garmin handheld in the cockpit for comparison, and his course and speed reading were noticeably more stable than those produced by the Apple upgrade, which makes me curious what aspect of the software accounts for this. Is it the inevitable compromise the programmers must make between battery life and the sampling rate on the GPS satellite data?

Perhaps freezing is not the best term but here's what was happening. But first let me say that we just took our first extended cruise and, except for what I'm going to describe, the software was great.

I had several instances, more frequent later in the trip, where MacENC stopped detecting the GPS input. I have it tied to a Garmin 210 via Keyspan serial port. There is no other equipment tied to either the Garmin or the laptop. My MacBook Pro is powered either by DC or AC (generator or inverter), in either case using MacGyver's Kensington power brick set-up. During each episode, the Garmin continued to track, so I know I was receiving signals. I first tried to close the GPS window and then reconnect, to no avail. Then I quit MacENC and restarted. I think that may have worked once. But the vast majority of the times I had to do a computer restart. Each time, I double checked USB connections and found nothing amiss. And I could not tie it to rough water perhaps affecting connections.

A few times this occurred on initial start-up, but most occurrences were after tracking well for awhile. It just suddenly quit receiving. Has anyone experienced this or are there some suggestions?
