For those interested in running Windows on an Intel-based Mac, this week brought two interesting announcements. First, in the ongoing battle of one-upmanship between Parallels and VMware, Parallels announced a new initiative http://ptn.parallels.com/en/news/id,11293 to help developers package and distribute virtual appliances - prepackaged virtual machines containing a full operating system and applications, configured to perform specific tasks and ready to run without any setup. The Parallels Technology Network http://ptn.parallels.com/ provides developer support and documentation; developers who submit virtual appliances that meet the requirements created by Parallels can be listed in the Parallels Virtual Appliances Directory, http://ptn.parallels.com/en/ptn/pva/home/ which is very much like VMware's Virtual Appliance Marketplace. http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/

Meanwhile, Parallels Desktop http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/ and VMware Fusion http://www.vmware.com/products/beta/fusion/ now have another competitor: Innotek's VirtualBox, http://www.virtualbox.org/ a free, open-source virtualization environment previously available only for Windows and Linux. Now available in its first public beta for Mac OS X, VirtualBox lets users of Intel-based Macs install and run numerous versions of Windows, DOS, and Linux, as well as other Unix-like operating systems. With all the buzz about VHF AIS receivers, there is also a mature, longer range HF as well as VHF, technology for position recording, the Ham radio APRS.

APRS is an abbreviation for Automatic Packet Reporting System, and it is a graphical method of broadcasting positioning information in "real time" from packet radio-equipped stations. It was originally designed by Bob Bruninga WB4APR in the early 90's, but it has seen explosive growth in the last few years due to excellent software for Mac Linux and Windows.

My question is this: Anybody out there using MacENC have any interest in adding APRS capability to MacENC to extend the range of AIS position reporting?

Look at a site such as http://machamradio.com/HamsAndX.html , (where I wish Mac ENC was listed) for some choices of APRS software. Look at Paketograph, a universal binary, for example

Let us read if you think it should be included in Mac ENC, or if Mac ENC should be simply linked to an existing Mac OS X APRS package.

OK, using iweb I have a basic website up for Jaga. However, I'm now finding iweb to be a bit constraining and would like a little bit more flexibility in creating and modifying my website. Any suggestions on a alternative, though economical, application for this, something short of Adobe's very capable, but rather pricy, offerings?

It has come time for me to specify the electronics that I want the factory to install on a new boat (a Lagoon 420). This is a production boat, so the factory is not really interested in doing a custom job. I will have additional work done after the boat comes off the line.

The factory will install Raymarine instruments and autopilot. I will have a radar installed after market. I am passing on adding a chartplotter (the 12" Raymarine unit runs around $4000). I would prefer to use my MacMini as the "brains" of the boat, for course plotting, GPS navigation, and general multi-media use (video and music).

My main question is about the radar. I know that the Raymarine instruments use "Seatalk" as the interface language (I may be using the wrong terminology). If I add a Raymarine radar, can the MacENC program "read" this input and can I then overlay it onto the electronic charts? What hardware will I need to connect the Mac to the radar?

I also want to use a MacBook to take onshore and for internet connection. Can the mini and the MacBook share the MacENC program?

Finally, what am I overlooking?

P.S. I also need to find a 12v monitor/video screen that I can use as the display for the mini and also for the family to watch movies. There must be 12v screens out there. Where should I start looking?

I've bought S63 ENC charts for Benelux (Netherlands, Belgium) from Chartworld.
They do work great with MacENC but I noticed that details especially names are missing for harbors, villages and towns.
I always have to switch to raster charts to check names.
Raster charts seems to show more details for landscapes as do ENC charts.

Is this a problem with all ENC charts? Or is it related to encrypted S63 or is it related to MacENC decoding infos from ENC charts?
