I am sure there is somewhere somekind of list of suitable cheap USB GPS hardware. I just cannot find any good topic on that. The ones I find here in Finland are like 80eur+. And that is a bit too much for something I don't really need.

Can we get the RSS feed working so that we get notification of New Topics and not new messages to existing topics???

In the forums there is huge amout of information but to find the information needed it takes some time to browse all the posts that might have some interesting information. If we are active enough there might be possibility to collect all "known facts" and other things to wiki so that newbies could perhaps better find the basics and solution on some problems.

Some basic on

- what mac to use
- what software to use for what purpose
- what other hardware
- how to power mac on board

..maybe

Or is there somewhere these basics and I just happened to miss those

I've been playing with the Vodafone (rebranded Huawei E220) USB modem while sailing this week. It works really well, and is a great alternative to all those ad-hoc wifi access changes I used to rack up.

This may be a bit of a Luddite question but I will ask it regardless. I have a new Macbook from work and I suppose I could take it on my boat but I would rather not. So I am thinking of getting a cheap used iBook or some other G3 and using it. How slow of one do people have experience with when using GPSNAVX? I know I could spring for a faster one with more bells and whistles but I actually hesitate to bring one on vacation because if I have wireless, internet, e-mail and DVD's I will use them and I like to get away from that. And unfortunately I have no self control. Any experience- Thanks Todd Miller

The August SSCA Newsletter has a note from a guy using a Panasonic Toughbook CF-08 on his boat. This looks way cool. It's a waterproof, shock proof dumb terminal that connects by WIFI to a computer running XP Pro. Basically it is a thin client that replicates the screen of the host computer with a battery-driven outdoor touchscreen. Sounds like the real thing. It's designed for outdoor construction sites and stuff like that.

Question: Any rich guys out there who want to try running it with Windows XP running on a virtual machine on a Mac? You could have MacENC, C-MAP, and Navionics all running in different windows. And you could explain to your wife how you were actually SAVING money by combining them all into one system. Maybe.

I sail on the north shore of Massachusetts around Marblehead and Gloucester harbors. I have downloaded the latest ENC's from NOAA. I don't have coverage for some of Salem sound, Gloucester hardor and Plymouth harbor. Am I missing something or these areas not covered? Thanks for any help. Mark
P.S. I have a 1Ghz Ibook with 1Gb of ram. I know this is the bare minimum to run MacENC but it works OK as long as I don't try to do to much at one time. If anyone knows any tricks to make it work better please let me Know. Thanks
